Under normal circumstances, before WW1, they would destroy the records of a man who died while serving. They had also stopped using muster books 15-20 years before, so the military records available are a bit limited. You should still check Findmypast in case there was a miss file.

I cannot find him in the Boer War medal rolls, so other than finding when he enlisted by finding when a nearby number enlisted, I do not think there are any military records to help you.

According to FindMyPast they have Indian BMD records that suggest he was Francis H and also known as Frank.

Hi Ken,
Thank you so much for the reply and the advice regarding my query.
Shame about the lack of records and about the Boer war medal rolls also . There is a Boer war medal? available through a dealer for a F Studd and was hoping that everything came together although the service numbers different.
Queens S.A Medal, 2 clasp South Africa,and Cape Colony Pte 4771 F Studd.A.O.C.
Thanks again for your time and advice.
Bob.
