Ralph Peters - Southport 1824 - 1886
« on: Wednesday 30 July 14 20:47 BST (UK) »
Hi, please can you help me to find the parents of Ralph Peters. I believe that he was born around 1824 and lived in Southport. His father is called John according to his marriage record. He died in a lifeboat disaster in 1886. I have found two people called Ralph Peters born in Wigan, although I cannot prove any link to the Ralph Peters in Southport. Thank you!  :)

There are several accounts of the disaster in historic newspapers.  In one account it says that Ralph Peters was from Boundary Street which might help identify him on the censuses.

Tragically, another account says that Ralph's wife went into premature labour at the news, and the baby was stillborn.  Ralph and the baby were buried together. (15 Dec 1886, London Evening Standard)

The 1861 census gives Ralph's place of birth as North Meols, which might be another place to check out

If the 1851 cenus entry which I mentioned with birth in Wigan is him, then he was born 21 Oct 1824, baptized 5 Jan 1825. Parents John and Mary.

Don't worry about the North Meols / Southport bit. They seem to be interchangeable - I think North Meols was what it was originally called.
There's an excellent free forum that deals well with queries there, go via the North Meols family history Society site, or  http://nmfhssouthport.myfreeforum , I think. It doesn't seem terribly active, but they do have good knowledge and are very helpful. It was "off" briefly a week or so back, but is fine now.
Threlfall (Southport), Isherwood (lancs & Canada), Newbould + Topliss(Derby), Keating & Cummins (Ireland + lancs), Fisher, Strong& Casson (all Cumberland) & Downie & Bowie, Linlithgow area Scotland . Also interested in Leigh& Burrows,(Lancashire) Griffiths (Shropshire & lancs), Leaver (Lancs/Yorks) & Anderson(Cumberland and very elusive)
