Edmonton Workhouse - Babies
« on: Wednesday 30 July 14 21:45 BST (UK) »

Are there any records for babies other than discharge from the workhouse?  My grandmother is
documented as being discharged two months after her birth - a month before her mother!
There isn't a forwarding address for either.  Any suggestions of where to look please?

Thank you

Two possibilities.

The mother was unwell and needed medical treatment so baby was cared for by her family??

Baby was being put up for adoption/fostering.  What year are we talking about?

I have been trying to establish this info for a long time. Grandmother was born 1902  and
Isn't on the 1911 census in her birth name or her known surname, neither are the couple who
? adopted her. If she was boarded out would there have been a record of this?

Unfortunately no.  Those type of arrangements were "informal" ones and legal adoption wasn't introduced until 1927.

Can you post details of your grandmother and anything you know about her birth mother and her adoptive parents?

We are  unable to post any 1911 details that are only obtainable via subscription due to copyright issues but it is permissable for us to "point you in the right direction" if we do find her so you can look for yourself

If you have not looked at

◦Edmonton Union: Guardians' minutes (1837-1930);

it may be worth doing so. They are at the London Metropolitan Archives as they sometimes do mention what happened to individual people who were discharged.

Also if you have not seen the discharge book it would be worth looking at it as there may be extra details there like who she was sent to
James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

Thank you both,

My information is from the Religious Creed Register and doesn't
give any other information after their discharge dates.
