can anyone direct me to a free site that will let me know where a relative lived during the years 1920-1970s please, i did come across one last year, it gave me details of the address, who they lived with etc, similar to a census.

I'm not sure that there is a free site, but Ancestry and Find My Past sometimes have free sessions/trial subs.  This website might tell you some other sources http://www.electoralregisters.org.uk/

Which county are you looking at, or are you looking for a country-wide resource?
