Company Sergeant Major (CSM) Ernest Henry Knight was born in Dudley, Worcs. and prior to the war was a plate layer with the Great Western Railways, living at 9 Western Cottages, Russell Place, Cheltenham. He was an old-time-expired soldier who had seen service during the South African War, re-enlisting in 1914 at Looe, Cornwall in the 4th Battalion Worcestershire Regiment. He served for over three years in the Middle-East and France and was killed during the German Spring offensive of 1918 at the defence of Nieppe Forest sector of the River Lys. The Regimental History for the day of his death, relates that the Battalion was engaged continuously throughout the day against the oncoming enemy. German patrols pushed forward and their artillery intermittently bombarded the line. It was undoubtedly in these actions that CSM Knight lost his life. He is buried in Le Grand Beaumart British Cemetery, Steenwerck, France.
