Private William Knight was born in Gotherington, the son of William and Sarah Knight of Gotherington, near Cheltenham. Prior to the war he was employed at Cavendish House of The Promenade, Cheltenham, Furnishers. He enlisted in the 1st Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment in Cheltenham and went to France on the 10th February 1915. He was subsequently transferred to the 7th (Service) Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment and drafted to Gallipoli in July 1915, from where he was evacuated, suffering from dysentery, to Mudros Hospital, Island of Lemnos, where he died on the 7th December 1915. He is buried in Portianos Military Cemetery, West Mudros
