Dunbar in Clogherny by Beragh
« on: Saturday 02 August 14 21:51 BST (UK) »
I am unable to find a registration for the birth of my great-grandmother Jane Dunbar, daughter of Alexander Dunbar and Sarah Elkin who were married in Edenderry, Co.Tyrone in 1853. Jane was married to Joseph Donaldson in 1887 in Glasgow and gave her age as 20. On being widowed she re-married as Mary Dunbar. The other Dunbar children were all registered at Sixmilecross and apparently lived in Clogherny by Beragh in Termonmaguirk Parish. What churches are in this area where I can enquire about baptisms?

I believe they were Church of Ireland/Presbyterian although the family of what should be Jane's oldest brother were Presbyterian and Roman Catholic.

Hi,
I can find several later children of your couple:-
Sarah 16 May 1869
James 27 Apr 1872
Bella  7 Jul 1875.
The births were registered in the sub-district of Termonmaguirk and a church is mentioned in Sixmilecross.

Regards
Stewart, Irwin, Morrison, Haslett, Murrell - Dungiven area Co. Londonderry
Browne, Barrett -Co.Armagh
Neil, Smyth _Co. Antrim

According to the PRONI website, there are 4 churches in the Church of Ireland parish of Termonmaguirk. The one at Cooley or Sixmilecross, which may be the one referred to above, has baptisms from 1836 onwards. Those for 1836 to 1871 have been copied and are held in PRONI on microfilm MIC583/7. Later records are still held by the church.

The local Presbyterian church in Sixmilecross has no records prior to 1900 (earlier records were destroyed in a fire).
