Hi Anne!
So....you have tried to get your mother's marriage certificate right? By tried do you mean that you cannot find the reference for the marriage entry you're looking for - as in you can't find the certificate in any index? I take it that on your birth certificate one of her previous surnames is her maiden name, and the second previous surname must be from a marriage prior to her marriage to your father, have I interpreted this correctly? Is there anybody in the family that can clear things up for you?

Ryan.

Hi Anne

Was this a case where your mother married for a second time?

In that case she may have married in her first married name, not her maiden name.  Or it may be that her mother remarried, and she took on her stepfather's surname?

I have spoken to an uncle and he remembers her getting married to my dad when she was 18.

My grandmother did remarry but this name is not on the b. cert neither is her fathers

How odd !

Do you have any brothers or sisters that you can check the information given on their certificates?

Could your mother's mother been married more than twice?

Looks like you might have to do a bit more digging.   Do you know what your mother's maiden name was - or is this what you are trying to find out?

Anne

In the column for mother's name does it say (we'll use some pretend names):

Elizabeth SMITH late JONES formerly BROWN ............. like that?

The name that is given first will be the name that you were registered with - correct ???

Is your mother still alive?

Best wishes

Hi Anne

Just had a thought or two ;D

If you know your father's name - have you looked for him in the marriage indexes?  Does your uncle remember the church or the town in which your father and mother married? You only need the one reference to order a certificate.

Do you know if/when your parents died?  Sometimes the information on death certificates can open up another avenue to explore.

Assume you have already got as far as you have from information from the home you were in.  What about your brothers - were they in a different home, would it be possible to track them down?

Is the 'Salter' a previous surname, or another middle name?  I only ask because my husband's family kept some surnames as middle names for more than one generation.

Confused as to why Morris would be one of your mother's previous surnames if that was her mother's maiden name?

probably no help whatsoever!
