Shoemaker dies aged 27
« on: Wednesday 06 August 14 20:12 BST (UK) »
My husbands 2x gg father was a Master shoemaker this information I have just obtained from his death certificate 1857. He was born and lived in Brighton but I can not find information regarding his training. I am not sure if he worked for himself or an employer?
I contacted the Keep but was told that records only exist of people who were Paupers and I guess they would have been supported by the church, hence records exist for them.
Can anyone suggest where I may be able to locate training and business information. From the information I have no-one else in the family was a shoemaker. You maybe thinking why did he died so young he had T.B. and had suffered for two years before he died. His name was Richard Murrell his wife Katie Campbell.

Hi,

I have found an apprentice record for one of my ancestors on Ancestry.  Worth a try.

Have you found him in the 1851 census? That might specify whether he was a master or journeyman.

Hi,

I have trawled through some trade directories for that period of time he was alive and I cannot find anything to suggest he owned a place. So possibly he was an employee.

Just to answer GR2 as I looked up the 1851 census a minute ago, Richard Murrell (transcribed Mussell in Ancestry) was a Shoemaker.

In the 1858 Melville & Co Directory of Sussex there is a Henry Murrell Boot & Shoemaker at 25 Newhaven Street Brighton. That might be worth investigating further.

Looks like the mother worked at 'The Plough' which was where they lived at 1 North Gardens. Maybe he plied his trade there?

Hi everyone thank you very much for all your replies.  Much of the information I have has come via another person researching the Murrell name.  I have Richard on the 1841 census living at North Gardens 1851 states 1 North Gardens aged 21 shoemaker. The death cert I bought says Master Shoemaker?
I haven't come across a Henry Murrell but thinking this could have been an distant relative who trained Richard in the trade.
Sean I had seen beer retailer but hadn't thought of a pub, i thought maybe an off licence.
I'm getting excited think a visit is due to Brighton. My husband is gobsmacked by it all he never knew any of this info. So now I need to find the pub and follow up Henry Murrell.  ;D kathleen

Queen's Gardens is still there (near the station) though there's no Plough at number 1, there's another pub the Caxton Arms halfway down the road (no 36) and there used to be one called the Rose and Crown where according to this photo
http://regencysociety-jamesgray.com/volume31/source/jg_31_136.html

the land it was built on was owned by a William Morrell in the 1820s

Don't forget that at that time many people sold beer from the front room of their homes as a second source of income, I have several ancestors in that category and I also found a lot when I researched all the pubs there have ever been in Littlehampton according to census and trade directories.  They called their home such and such pub to make it seem grander than it probably was.  Many brewed their own beer as well.  Beer retailer meant they were not licensed to sell spirits - officially that is.   :D
