Unlawful Conversion of a Motor Car
« on: Thursday 07 August 14 20:38 BST (UK) »
While researching my extended family, I learned that one of them was charged in Auckland in 1944 with the "unlawful conversion of  a motor car".  He was 19 at the time and was sentenced "to be detained in a Borstal institution for two years".

I am wondering what on earth he could have done that would warrant such punishment.  There is no mention that the car was stolen so I'm assuming it was his.

Congratulation!

Such stories are the salt in your ancestor's soup.

- He made it loud and noisy (drilling holes in the exhaust pipe)
- He made it faster: Car tuning

As it was 1944, perhaps it was a wartime restriction that he contravened?

Conversion in this context is a legal term, explained here:
http://legal-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/conversion

It has nothing to do with making an alteration to the car itself.

"unlawful conversion of  a motor car" in NZ means theft of an automobile and it is still called car conversion,

Perfect!  Now I understand.  As noted in the link provided by JenB, 'conversion' is a fancy word for 'steals'.  Thanks all for helping me solve a (very) minor mystery.
