Hi

I am the Great Grandson of Charles Gould who was killed in action on 17th September 1914 in the White Flag incident during the First battle of Aisne. I have been trying to find the location of this event as I am visiting France soon and would like to pay my respects. I have only recently found out that he must have joined the Army earlier and been on the reserve list, as he was working as a gardener in London according to the 1911 census. It was only after reading the Elmswell Memorial Project (http://www.elmswell-history.org.uk/arch/lives/memproj/29men.html), the village where both Private Gould and Private Farrow grew up I noticed their service numbers where only separated by one number. I guess they joined up together 1905, according to the website. Due to my Grandfather being born after he died, very little is known about him. Any information on Charles George Gould's service record or any more details of where he died would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Mark

This is probably too late for your visit.

Information taken from The Commonwealth War Graves Commission:

Private Charles George GOULD is recorded on the memorial at La Ferte-sous-Jouarre.   He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Gould, of Elmswell, Bury St. Edmund's.

Private Frederick William FARROW is recorded on the memorial at Le Touret.   He is the son of Harriet Farrow, of Mill Lane, Woolpit, Bury St. Edmunds, and the late Henry Farrow.

I think there must not be a grave for either of them.

Thanks, I did know my great grandfather was commemorated on the memorial at La Ferte-sous-Jouarre and I did get to visit it. I also went to the small village of where the Northamptonshire Regiment were in the days leading up to his death. The Regimental Museum did get in touch too but it appears his service record, along with so many others was lost. Thanks again for the information. Anything else anyone can provide on the Regiment would be greatly appreciated.

Mark

I missed this one earlier. I will see if I can find anything on them and at least give you a "framework" for their service.

Hi

Thanks, anything at all would be great because the family know very little about their Grandfather / Great Grandfather. We have been told that Private Farrow joined the Northamptonshire Regiment in 1905 in Bury St Edmunds and went to serve in India for almost 8 years before going on to the reserve. Charles Gould's service number is only 2 on from his although we understand he enlisted in Stowmarket. We do know from the 1911 census that he was living in London and working as a gardener. I have read somewhere that the Northampton's returned from India in 1911 before the census so we don't know if he went out too or was just on the reserve.

Thanks again. Mark
