Irish Family
« on: Sunday 10 August 14 10:18 BST (UK) »
Hi

I have been trying to trace my Irish ancestry for some years now without any results at all
I have had help from a Genealogist but without any luck. I guess that I am missing the vital piece of information that will identify my family.
My paternal grandfather was Patrick Dolan he states on many records that he was from Strokestown, Roscommon, he stated on his marriage cert that he was Patrick George Dolan and that his father was George Dolan, occupation Builder
Patrick was a soldier in the 2nd Battalion Royal Irish Regiment and he died at Ypes on the 8 May 1915
Any help would be much appreciated

Thankyou

Kathryn

Welcome to Rootschat.

I see from Find My Past that the Irish National Roll of honour says that he enlisted in Chester.
We really need to see his Army service record as that should give a date of birth. And hopefully a next of kin.

Hi

We do not have his records as I believe they were destroyed in WW2.
His nok at the time was my grandmother, she remarried in 1918!
The only nok I have is on his marriage cert but I can find no trace of this family.
He was born abt 1878. He is on the census at Crewe Cheshire in 1891 and he is on the Railway registers at the same time, there is also a Michael Dolan who seems to appear at the same time
I just do not know where to search next

Kind regards

Kathryn

Ah right- if he is on the 1891 census at Crewe then you have a rough idea of when he was born  ;D

I can't see him at all in 1891- can you tell us the ref number or who he is living with- presumably he'll be just 13?

Hi Blue70

Sorry I meant 1901 census

I have looked at all the births in Strokestown that may fit Patrick but unfortunately I just cannot attach any one of them to my Patrick.
Just to make matters worse on the 1911 census he started to call himself George Jones!! He even registered one of his daughters as Jones. No idea why. So as you can see my task in tracing my family looks almost impossible

kind regards

Kathryn

How do you know your man is recorded under the names Patrick Maron and George Jones? Why do you think it's him?
