I was looking for an inscription of a headstone (if there is one) for a John Charlton who was buried on 30 Oct 1900 at All Saints, Skelton-in-Cleveland, North Yorkshire aged 53. I believe he may have been the husband of a Martha Esther Stubbs (who I have identified in censuses) who married her in 1884 in Guisborough district, but he doesn't appear in the 1891 census at Marske with her and in the 1901 census at Marske she is a widow.

I'm afraid I can't help with the M.I. but perhaps I or someone else will be able to find John in the 1891 census. Do you know where he was born?

I'm afraid I don't and I also now think I had the wrong burial record as I think I found the person buried in 1900 in the 1891 census and he had another wife.

This is the only information I have that might give clues, my John Charlton's (actually a friend's) wife's census entries:

1891 Marske, Guisborough, Yorkshire

Anne Stubbs head 65 widow 65 born Snainton Yorkshire
Martha E Charlton daughter 27 married housekeeper born Snainton Yorkshire
Archibald Charlton grandson 5 born Marske Yorkshire
Blanche Charlton granddaughter 3 born Marske Yorkshire
Daisy Charlton granddaughter 2 mths born Marske Yorkshire

1901 Marske, Guisborough, Yorkshire

Martha Charlton head widow 34 charwoman born Snainton Yorkshire
Archibald Charlton son 15 born Marske by the Sea Yorkshire
Daisy Charlton daughter 10 born Marske by the Sea Yorkshire
Kate Charlton daughter 8 born Marske by the Sea Yorkshire
Frank Stubbs single 26 ironstone miner born Newton Dale Yorkshire

The Stubbs are Martha's relatives rather than John's. Martha's birth seems to have been registered Martha Esther Stubbs 2nd Q 1864 Scarborough and her marriage to John Charlton seems to have been registered 4th Q Guisborough as Martha Esther Stubbs.

So I think John Charlton died sometime between 1892/3 and 1901. I've looked at Ancestry probate records for John Charltons in Yorkshire and Durham without success. I think the marriage certificate may be the only way to go.

I've trawled around the 1891 and 1881 censuses looking for some clues and have come to the conclusion that yes, you need the marriage cert!

Could John have been a sailor? There's a John Charlton born in Middlesbrough in 1852 who is shown aboard a vessel in Kent in 1881. The marriage cert would not only give you his year of birth (near enough) it would give you his occupation too.
