Rugby medal
« on: Wednesday 20 August 14 09:52 BST (UK) »
After have a good clear out, we came across my husbands grandfather's watch chain and some kind of medal fastened on to it.  The medal is shaped like a shield and on the reverse side is engraved (Leeds FC (looks like championship) 1901-02) and the name S Herbert. (Samuel Herbert)  The fob chain is 9ct gold but not sure what ct the medallion is.  At the moment it is in the jewellers being cleaned and hope to get it back next week,  I have searched all over but cannot find anything about this medal.  My husband seems to think it may have something to do with one of the churches in Leeds which started up some kind of Football/Rugby team.  This (he says) was the forerunner of all the clubs in Leeds.  We would be grateful if anyone can shed some light on this object.  Regards Jean Herbert

Association Football (the round ball game) -
"Leeds Clarendon ..... captured the Leeds League Championship (Yorks Evening Post 1 March 1902)

Rugby Football (the 13 man game)
"The next match in tomorrow's programme, which claims attention, is the match to be decided at Headingley between Leeds champions and a team representing the Rest of the Competition.....". (Yorks Evening Post 18 Apr 1902)

The Leeds thirteen was named but did not include a Herbert.

Hi,
Couple of mentions in the Yorkshire Evening Post
27 Aug 1901
In an article about new players for Leeds F C .. "William Evans and S. Herberts, both Leeds parish church centre three quarters"

1902 same match
"Herberts saving danger by falling on the ball"  " Herberts was injured and carried off" "the injury to Herberts turned out to be a twisted knee but he pluckily decided to give the limb another trial in the second half"

Yorkshire Evening Post 5 April 1902
".... the injury to Herberts put the seal on any chance which Leeds may have possessed"

This was only a fortnight before the big match on 19th, which might explain why Herberts didn't make the team sheet.

The Yorks Ev Post, 17 Oct 1902, finally publishes more than just the surname!

"Sam Herberts is taking Llewellyn's place in the centre".

But every reference I've found is to Herberts with an "s".

Thank you all for the exciting information on Samuel Herbert(s)  Apparently the name seems to change in different generations. The ones we found originated in the Forest of Dean Gloucestershire, the name being "Herbert"  The story in the family is that when one of the parents of Samuel went to register him, the registrar added the "S" on.  Later generations dropped the "S".  At the moment the watch chain and medal have gone to be cleaned but as soon as it comes back I will post a picture.  Thanks once again.  Regards Jean Herbert
