Sister Charlotte Acklin Otterson - birth registered Dec 1884 - Gateshead - 10 a 936
14 Sep1884 in  Star Gate,Ryton,Winlaton, Durham according to anc tree. Shows a marriage to William W Stanley and a son Leo Donald Stanley born 1916 died 29 August 1941 Stanislaus County, California   

Parents Marriage :- 12 November 1881 - Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland, England.
Robert Otterson aged 26 years (Father John)  Elizabeth Little aged 19 years  (Father Thomas Little)

Added :- Think it would be an advantage to have the marriage certificate for Robert to see if there is any other information. The name of the father John seems to tie in with what I found below.

Charles Otterson aged 3 years appears on a Philadelphia Passenger List 5 July 1885 - British Princess -  Liverpool to Philadelphia with parents Robert Otterson 30 years, Miner, Elizabeth 24 years and a sister Charlotte Inf.

A child Thomas Otterson was born to the couple in Missouri 3 July 1887 and died 13 August 1888 St Louis Missouri. Aged 1 year 1 month and 9 days. 

Robert John Otterson born 16 April 1890 died 17 August 1891 - Aged 1 year 4 months and 1 day.

Can also see him listed on the California Death Index - Charles Otterson born 26 October 1881 Illinois  died 22 August 1957 Alameda California. Mother's Maiden Name:- Little.

The 1900 census St Louis Ward 7, St Louis (Independent City), Missouri also says Charles was born Illinois

Laura Irene Otterson/ Hanson appears on the California death Index 13 June 1954 - Sacremento. California.

WW1 Draft for Charles states birth date 26 October 1882 - Native Born. Resides Clarkesville. Texas with a wife Ollie. Tall, slender with blue eyes and red hair. Has a bad ankle. Dated Sept 12 th 1918.

I think that Charles and Charlotte were reported to the census taker as being born in Illinois because that way they would be native-born, instead of from England. I don't think that my grandfather knew he was born in Newcastle. He also reported that he was born in San Francisco on several of his children's birth certificates.

It might be that he thought he was born in the US or it was more political to be a native. 

The person giving the date of birth for the death certificate did not know his birth year--close but no cigar.  I have a birth date of a family member literally written in stone (tombstone) that is a year off also--I have his birth cert from Wales and it took a while to find as I was looking at the year from the tombstone.

The marriage of Robert Otterson and Elizabeth Little took place in Newcastle St. Nicholas

Can't see your Robert Otterson on Census - there was another Robert (Pearson) Otterson who was born 1856 Monkwearmouth, Durham and married Q2 1881 Newcastle upon Tyne who also immigrated - so he tends to show up on census and border crossings.
