This is the 1911 census showing Ephraim Harris Steel and his family in Brampton

Head   Ephraim Harris Steel   56

Son   James Steel   26
Son   John Carriethers Steel   21

It states that they have had five children by 1911, four are still alive, Maggie Jane Carruthers, James Steel, John Carruthers Steel and Amy Steel

my thanks

The only way to find out is either to buy the birth certificate, or find the parish register entry.
That would confirm the parent's names. ;D

thank you

I just asking because some very helpful genealogists have in the past provided baptism records that show the parents names

The name suggests he is their son because his first name is James, named after Ephraim's father and grandfather and Harris is his second name, Harris is the second name of Ephraim and the maiden name of his grandmother Sarah Harris

Not necessarily helpful, but there is an article about Ephraim you might find interesting, it does mention his uncle with surname Harris
cheers

February 18th 1927 Carlisle Journal
Mr Ephraim H Steel of 93 Main Street Brampton, who will be 73 years of age next month, has tendered his resignation as organist and choirmaster of the Brampton Primitive Methodist Church, a position he has filled voluntarily for a period of 50 years. When a boy of five years Mr Steel went from Hayton with his parents to live at Brampton, his father at that time being gardener for the late Mr William Carrick, solicitor and coroner, the White House, which was converted into the Brampton Secondary School. Mr Steel has been associated with the Primitive Methodist Church since boyhood and regularly attended the Sunday School and Church services in the old chapel in Moatside was built. At that time the Rev W Saul of Carlisle was the superintendent minister, and it was during the latter’s ministry that Mr Steel was appointed to play the harmonium in the old chapel, for it had not then possessed an organ, and also acted a choirmaster. Mr Steel carried on the duties of organist and choirmaster during the ministry of the Rev John Forster of Lanercost, now retired, who came to Brampton as a probationer under the superintendence of the Rev W Saul. Since that time the Church has made steady progress, a manse and new church and school have been built, and a fine two manual pedal organ has been installed, the latter being opened by the late Mr Fred Willey, for many years organist of Brampton Parish Church. Mr Steel, who is self-taught and received no musical training, has frequently played at organ recitals and musical services in the church, whilst the choir under his tuition has attained a high standard of excellence. Steps are being taken to make public recognition in a tangible form of Mr Steel’s valuable services. Mr Steel’s maternal uncle, the late Samuel Harris, who lived in Cecil Street, Carlisle, was for many years organist of St Cuthbert’s Church, Carlisle. Mr Steel will be succeeded by Miss Norah Forster and Mr John Smith as joint organists. A portrait of Mr Steel appears on our Picture Page.

Ephraim Steel was mentioned in the 1884 Brampton Directory - Gill Place, Back St, Brampton, Cumberland. Under painters, paper-hangers gilders and glaziers .

Bulmers Directory 1901 - Main Street Brampton - Ephraim Steel - Painter -

Hi guys

Thanks for earlier.

I contacted the Carlisle Library today and managed to get hold of a copy of Ephraim H Steel's portrait, does anyone want to see it?

Hello,

I have just joined Roots Chat and I am thrilled to find the article posted about Ephraim Harris Steel.

My husband is a great-great grandson of Ephraim Harris Steel and the great-grandson of his daughter, Amy Steel (1886-1960).

Amy Steel married James Mayne Johnstone (1882-1962) in 1905 at Brampton, Cumberland and they had four children born in Moffat, Dumfries, Scotland.

James Carruthers Johnstone (1906)
Amy Isobel Johnstone (1907)
John Thorburn Johnstone (1908)
Elizabeth Steel Johnstone (1910)

I have been researching the Steel family off and on for 10 years and have yet to connect to anyone from this line.

I would be happy to hear from anyone else researching this family.

Thanks
K Johnstone
