My grandfather and his brother
« on: Wednesday 10 September 14 20:00 BST (UK) »
My grandfather and his brother came over on the Corinthian.  They arrived in St. John, New Brunswick on March 30,1913.  From there they were sent to Toronto where they were put into the Barnado home for orphans,  I have a Canadian census report from 1921 in which they are shown to be working on a farm in Essex , Ontario.  My question is I know they were separated at some point and worked on separate farms .  Is there any way of finding where they were between 1913 and 1921?   How do I access or get access to the census reports from Canada ?  The one I had was sent to me online.

How fortunate they were to end up in the same place.

The latest census available for Ontario Canada is the 1921 one, which you already have. It is, however available for free through the Ancestry website.

You should be able to get their records from Barnardo's although I understand they are quite expensive. They would probably tell you where they were, although there is no guarantee of course.

Had they been further west we could have found them in the mid decade, but Ontario didn't have in between censuses...The boys probably didn't work for Frank Clarence Butts the whole time, as I looked for them in Canada 1911, but the couple was in the U.S ( Peoria, Illinois, ) up to & including the 1910 census, then by 1930 were back in Detroit , Wayne, Michigan...Wonder if that is how the lads ended up in the U.S.?  They may have remained close to the family, as some of the children were treated well, although sadly some weren't...The son George Frederick may even have become a pal later in life. Wishful thinking on my part...

Ah, I see Sidney married 1924 Detroit so they mave have emigratedwith the family ....later called a child Lois  ;) so you never know, if she may have been named for Frank's wife?  https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/KHS8-ZV2

By the way I did my usual searches for information on Sidney & William and didn't come up with anything re: their time in Canada/Ontario...Sometimes the odd publication or letter home turns up a snippit.
So none of the other Brown children on the same voyage were siblings, right? ( Alfred/Charles)

J.J. Thank you for your reply ...I do know their mother came over in 1922 and reunited with thm in Canada..by that time she had remarried as their father died in 1909...When she came back they then moved to Detroit where in 1924 my grandfather married my grandmother...his brother met and married a Scottish woman. They did remain friends with a family in Ontario but I don't know if it was the same family.  They arrived in Canada from England in 1913 so I'm not sure they were in Peoria. It is my understanding they were in Canada until they came to Detroit in 1922.

No they were the only ones to come over...His eldest brother joined the Royal Navy sometime either during or just before WW1. and their sister and younger brother stayed with their mother.

j.j. I stand corrected he ( my grandfather)  came to Detroit in 1920.  He listed their( his and William's)address as 11 Victoria, Windsor Ont. so apparently he returned to Canada until his mother arrived in 1922.

Well they were on the 1921 Canada census, so they were physically there  ;D...Memories are often not jogged completely into place when thinking back

BTW I just found the marriage of George Frederick Butts in Ontario 1924 so the son remained...and I'd wager a guess he was the friend in Canada!
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FMFX-39K

also I was talking earlier about the Butts family being in the U.S. prior to the 1921, not the lads... ( The Butts family said they emigrated to Canada 1914 on the 1921...and the Butts also moved to Detroit before the 1930 census)
