john aston Staffordshire

Hi Guys

I am at the end of my tether and feel I have got too much of a mountain to climb. However I will run this by you for comments. I also have an easier task at the end should someone be good at reading handwriting that is.

I am looking for the death of a John Aston, (born around the 1770's). I know his daughter Rebecca Penryn Aston was born around 1822 in Birmingham. I know his wife Ann (e) has an entry on the 1851 Census as a widow in Amblecote, so there's your date range.  There is no entry for the family, (John, Ann, their daughters Susanna, Rebecca or Priscilla on the 1841 census).  The trouble is people that the 1837-1915 BMD shows 49 possible hits in Staffordshire alone. Lets assume one of them is my John Aston shown on the database for Staffordshire. How the hell do I find out if one of them is my John Aston? I know if the age at death puts the deceased as being born in 1770's and the informant is one of the known family I could accept that I guess, but i could spend almost £500 on Death certificates without any guarantees!! Any suggestions please?

The easier question is that if you go into the 1851 Census can someone tell me the occupation of Ann (e) Aston? (DOB around 1778)

Thanks for looking at this post

Regards

E,

I notice John Aston has signed his daughter, Elizabeth Mary Astons marriage entry to William Watmough which was in St George the Martyr in Southwalk on 6 January 1829.  So that narrows the timeline for his death a little.

Thanks Chris for the help.

Not that I know but I think both John Aston and William Watmough had reasonable jobs for a pension to be paid, (given the times we are speaking of that is).

I guess thing aren't looking great to try and trace him. Apart from Staffordshire he may be registered at the GRO in the Warwickshire of even Worcestershire counties......why didn't they know that the Census for 1841 was vital to complete as 173 years later a relative would be trying to trace them  :) Maybe if i get the Burial CD-Rom that shows 18 million UK burial records I may get lucky, you never know there may be a gravestone somewhere.

Once again Chris many thanks

E.

William and Elizabeth Mary Watmough appear to have a son Aubrey William in London in 1829. William is a gunsmith.

there's a possible death for Aubrey in Gainsborough in 1849

Hi Mabel

Thanks for the reply and until last night i did not realise that John and Ann had 3 more children, Thomas, Helen and Caroline. They already had 6 up to 1807 in the Westminster area of London, so that makes a round dozen, (so far). It's a pity i cannot find a marriage for any of his children between 1829 and 1851, at least that may reduce the period he died in, (that's if he signed anything, or I guess a post 1837 marriage it would say if he was deceased on the marriage certificate).

Once again thank you

Regards

Eric

Caroline Penryn died in June 1821, so that's one less to follow. Listed as daughter of JOhn and Ann, address Aston Street.

Ann Penryn and    John Aston
Marriage 1798, Westminster

There's a baptism of an Ann Penryn in Holborn in 1783, daughter of Thomas and Mary
