Theodore COXEN - Twickenham
« on: Thursday 30 June 05 01:01 BST (UK) »
Request for information on Theodore Coxen:

My name is David and one line of my family tree includes the Coxen’s. I researched this line in great detail some ten years ago.

Where to start???

Theodore was bpt. at St. Mary’s Twickenham on the 27/9/1826 son of Richard & Mary Ann Coxen.

Brothers & Sisters:
Richard Enos Coxen born prior to 1813 probably in Brentford, Middlesex (later married Mary Ann Snook.

The remainder were all baptised at S. Mary’s, Twickenham – these are records from the Bishop’s Transcripts for St. Mary’s which can be found at the London Record Office in the reading room.

Elizabeth Mary Ann Coxen bpt. 13/3/1814
William Coxen bpt. 29/3/1816 later married Mary Headlington 2/11/1840
Jane Coxen bpt. 21/10/1817
Charles Coxen bpt. 14/12/1821 buried 17/8/1828
John Coxen bpt. 6/8/1824 later married Emma Hammerton 20/6/1847
Sarah Emma Caecilla Coxen bpt. 20/5/1829 later married George Walter miller 31/1/1856
Joseph Coxen bpt. 16/2/1831 buried 27/11/1831

Prior to c.1813 Coxen family records can be found in “The Register for St. Mary’s Church Ealing”

Including:
Theodore’s Father:
Richard Coxen bpt. 6/1/1788 born 8/12/1787 son of Richard & Elizabeth Coxen

Richard’s brothers & sisters all bpt. St. Mary’s Ealing.

William Magson Coxen born 13/10/1782 ( My Great, Great, Great Grandfather)
John Magson Coxen born 13/1/1784
Jane Coxen born 2/8/1785

There were at least two more sisters Elizabeth (later Elizabeth Hales) and Mary.

This family’s parents Richard Coxen & Elizabeth married at St. Mary’s Ealing on 27/8/1781
Richard’s brother Samuel Coxen married Mary Gray 17/7/1780

When Richard & his brother Samuel were baptised “Coxson” also at St. Mary’s, Ealing the sons of Samuel & Sarah Coxson:

Samuel Coxson bpt. 29/9/1748  born 31/8/1748
Sarah Coxson bpt 21/9//1750 born 31.8/1750
Jane Green Coxson bpt. 5/10/1752 born 15/9/1752
Ann Coxson bpt. 28/4/1754 born 7/4/1754
Mary Coxson bpt. 25/4/1756
Elizabeth Coxen (yes Coxen the earliest entry spelt this way) bpt. 4/12/1757 born 7/11/1757
Richard Coxson bpt. 16/1/1760 born 21/12/1759.

Richard & Elizabeth’s burials are later mentioned in St. Mary’s, Twickenham’s Bishops Transcripts for burials:
Elizabeth Coxen 15/8/1834 aged 74
Richard Coxen 30/7/1837 aged 77

Richard and his sons William Magson, John Magson & Richard were all fishermen, although William Magson later became a fishmonger.

Now let’s Jump forward:
You asked about Theodore in the 1851 census:
He lived as a lodger at 122, Waterside Twickenham (possibly a pub as the head of the house was a James Bowyer a Licensed  Victualler – Theodore is listed as a Fisherman aged 23 but there is no mention of Charlotte Coxen at this address.

Also in Twickenham 1851:
Theodore’s Parents: Richard & Mary Coxen at 116, Waterside
Theodore’s brothers
John Coxen & family @ 131, Waterside (a waterman (boatman))
Theodore’s Uncle:
John Coxen (John Magson Coxen) and wife Mary Ann at 166, Waterside

I also know Theodore had at least one son:
Walter Henry Coxen born 1849 who later married Jemima Strudwick on 19/3/1870 they resided at “Waterside, Twickenham”
Walter Henry’s father is listed as Theodore Hunt Coxen a fisherman.

You can visit Theodore’s grave at: St. Mary’s Parish Cemetery, Oak Lane, Twickenham where he was buried with his parents:

Mary Ann Coxen          died August 26th 1854 aged 65 years
Richard Coxen         died September 29th 1869b aged 82 years
Theodore Hunt Coxen         died July 12th 1880 aged 53 years

Also in the same grave yard:

Theodore’s Uncle & family:

Mary Ann Coxen         died February 4th 1864 aged 77 years
John Magson Coxen(husband)   died January 22nd 1871 aged 76 years
George W. Miller         died November 20th 1872 aged 40 years
Elizabeth Hales         died October 12th 1874 aged 85 years

I also have a record of Theodore’s wife Charlotte Coxen second marriage to William Voice on 10th March 1862. They married in the Parish of Ham, Kingston. Charlotte’s father is listed as John Pines a publican, Charlotte is listed as a 30 year old widow.
??? Something not right there as we know Theodore was around until 1880 ???

Well that’s about it, hope this helps!

May also interest you to know that William Magson Coxen’s Great Grandson Sir William George Coxen was the 1939 Lord Mayor of London.
Also his Great, Great Grandson Harold Brian Coxen (but known as Vic) was a Brigadier in the Parachute Regiment and was awarded the DSO & MC for bravery in WW2.

David,

Thank you so much for your reply and all that wonderful information on the COXEN family.

My interest stems from the somewhat suspicious Charlotte PINES!  She was sister to my 2x Gr Grandmother Ann PINES.

I am in touch with a fellow PINES researcher who's husband is descended from Theodore and Charlotte's son  Walter Henry COXEN, I'm sure she will also be delighted with the details you have provided.

Thanks again  ;D
