Joining a long thread mid posts
« on: Thursday 30 June 05 13:07 BST (UK) »
Dear Techie people

I am very interested in the June challenge.

Today it is 80 pages long

I have read the first 27 pages today but my modem is slow and I had to leave to do something else about then. When I returned I could only rejoin the thread on pages 1, 2, 3, 79, 80.

I had to go to 3 then 5 then 7 etc

Unfortunately that method took so long to get back to where I was that I only advanced a few pages before I next had to leave the PC.  I dont think that is the way for me to go.

I then did a search for the words Robertson Jam as I knew they were on the page I was looking at, or the one before, the search found the words but took me not to that post, but to page 1.

So, I give up.

How do I read that thread on a slow modem?

How can I join it on say page 30?

Cheers Louise

Hi Louise

That's a good point, as I haven't found a way of getting to a mid-thread page without doing the same - and it is a bit of a pain.

I'm not sure threads of 80 pages were envisaged!

Maybe when a thread gets to a certain length it could be 'locked' and then a 'Part 2' started?   I notice this has been done with the BVRI look-up thread.

Or maybe the admin peeps have more elegant solutions! :)

cheers

Paul

PS

Whatever you do DON'T try printing the thread out, unless you've got shares in the Forestry Commission!!!  Last time I did (and this was a couple of weeks ago) it ran to 250 printed pages even then!

I have resolved this problem at least for my purposes, if others care to note.

I have saved the page as a favourite after reading about 10 pages each time, and added the words "page 10" or "page 20" etc to the end of the description of the webpage.

So that for example, in my favourites I have June challenge page 50.

I see that today's challenge has raced off already so I shall undoubtedly have July challenge page 10 bookmarked before I know where I am.

Hope that helps others

Regards

Louise

There is a method to allow you to go to any page you choose.

Each page currently has 15 messages.

Page 1 starts at message 0 (zero).
Page 2 starts at message 15
Page 3 starts at message 30
Page 4 starts at message 45 etc

The message number can be found near the end of the address in the address bar.
(between the fullstops just before html)

So, open any page of the discussion, then edit the ADDRESS BAR to point to the message number.

To convert page number to message number, use the following formula:

message = (page x 15) - 15

Thanks, that is very helpful. I have tried it out already on the July thread and it works a treat.
