Eliza Johnson born c 1816
« on: Friday 26 September 14 14:04 BST (UK) »
Hi

I would like help please with this conundrum. This lady is my husband's x 2 Gt. Grandmother.

According to 1851 & 1861 census info, she was born at Hockliffe. In 1871 it changes slightly to Oakley, Beds, not sure if pob was misheard!!!

She married Michael Grant in May 1838 in Malton, North Yorkshire, I have a copy of their mc, Eliza's father stated to be William Johnson- Occ -Horse Dealer.

Michael & Eliza lived their married life Kirton in Lindsey, Lincs. area, all 7 of their children born there

I am trying to check if she was either the Elizabeth Johnson, daughter of Hannah Sabey & William Johnson baptised Dec 1815 at Hockliffe or whether they were 2 different girls.

Personally I am going for 2 different girls, but have seen a couple of trees where the Grant name is shown.

If anyone has PR's for Hockliffe, Henlow and Oakley, and is able to check if there was an Eliza J baptised around 1816, I would be very grateful, thank you.

And thank you for reading this

You mean "Elizabeth Johnson, daughter of Hannah Sabey & William Johnson baptised Dec 1815 at Henlow" not Hockliffe. William Johnson and Hannah Sabey were my 3xg grandparents. Their daughter Elizabeth baptised 13 Dec 1815 at Henlow was buried aged 10 on 11 Sep 1825 at Henlow so you can eliminate her as being the one who married in Yorks.

Hi David,

A great quick reply, thank you for that. And I guess your W J was not a Horse Dealer.  Ever since I bought the mc in 2008 I've been thinking am I looking at a travelling family here, especially as Eliza was pregnant in Yorkshire when she married .

So back to the drawing board.

Hockliffe isn't a birthplace you're likely to invent on two successive censuses, so I tend to believe that she thought it was her birthplace. Whether or not it was is another matter! But I can't see other Johnson baptisms in Hockliffe at around that time although a William did baptise a child in 1791, but it's a long gap until 1816.

Hi again,

I have just looked at the record for the Eliza baptised in Cranfield 1814. Father's name not William though.

I can only go on what's written on mc, which was that they were both full age in May 1838, and then the ages on the census from 1841.
They were in Kirton -i-Lindsey then with the eldest 2 daughters, but that  one doesn't give her pob.
She does give Beds as the county  of birth on 3  following records though.

She wasn't dead in 1881, but I suspect she was  remarried as a widow, and I'm having trouble finding her.

I've just returned to this brick wall from 2008 btw so am still refreshing what I knew then.

I think the Eliza Johnson baptised in Cranfield in 1814, father Robert, married David Kedder in Newport Pagnell in 1838. She appears in censuses as being born in Cranfield in 1814 (as Reddr, Redden). So that wipes out the other possibility.

Thank you David, I was just about to log out.

I will try working sideways on the children I don't have full details for ( that's the 2 eldest girls Margaret & MaryAnn ) , and see if they lead me to  Eliza in 1881  ( or her death details)

Kind regards, and thanks again for doing the checks for me
