Alexander James 1919-1940 Capped for England/Wales?
« on: Saturday 04 October 14 13:56 BST (UK) »
Hi All

A little input is needed please.

I am looking for information on Alexander James he was born 1919 Bristol RD and his death was registered in 1940 also at Bristol aged 21.

Now I have been talking to his nephew and he remembers when he was little (in the mid 1940's) going into his grandads attic and finding a load of caps (like the ones you are given when you are capped to play for England). They apparently belonged to Alexander.
I have tried googling the name but not much joy.
I have tried the name with Football & Cricket too again no joy as of yet.
His father Samuel Thomas James was welsh. His mother was Jane Scott.
They lived in the Littlehampton area.

any Ideas where else you would receive these sort of caps? private school?
Any ideas welcome, and I will try and pursue all suggestions.

Cheers
Kath

Being "capped" did not mean you were actually given a cap, just that you were given the right to wear a cap with a particular emblem on it, if you wanted one you still had to go out and buy one  : :D.
ordinary ones were available to buy anywhere, you would find most village cricket teams wearing that sort of cap , some with there own emblem on, sewn on by mum no doubt.

another thought is that many schools had several teams for each sport, under 12,s under 14's under 16's comes to mind, a keen sportsman could be "capped" for rugby and cricket for each
of these groups and maybe for local teams as well
