Schools
« on: Saturday 04 October 14 21:51 BST (UK) »
Does anyone have info on schools in the 1920/30, near the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, probably between Kirkstall and Whitecote area.  Or any sweet or chocolate factories in the same area.

Thanks

Janette

Not that I can think of, any particular reason?
Plenty of mills, no schools.

My dad was born at Kirkstall, he said he lived mostly on a coal barge till his father died in 1930, at Newley Bridge. The family had an address at Whitecoats.  He also said that (when he went) he attended a jewish school for a time. He was one of only three non jewish boys there.  Just trying to find addresses for the family.

Not knowing if you know the area, as Whitecoats is on a steep hill the nearest school (could end up being corrected here) is Bramley with both council (national) and church schools.
Going down the hill we have Rodley I believe just had the one school (council).

Going from Newlay bridge towards Horsforth (once again a steep incline) there were not any Jewish faith schools, Catholic school and council school only.
The nearest Jewish faith school I would imagine is more likely towards the Moortown area.
(I would say 3miles from Horsforth as the crow flies)

Do you have a map of the area to visualise the distances involved?

In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth

Thanks, I see there is a Trafalgar Terrace mention for 1923. Couldn't find it on todays map. Would that be near to any of the addresses I have.  I've come across Rutland Terrace (1922) and Burley Street, though the later I'm sure was in the 1950's

Thanks
Janette
