Hirst,William b1832-1838
« on: Tuesday 07 October 14 23:51 BST (UK) »
Dear helpful people, is there a place called 'Wardal' or Wardel or maybe Nardal or Nardel? Cannot quite read the handwriting on his 1867 marriage certificate (Victoria Australia MC 1867/4501; Newbridge, Victoria) He was living at Bealiba south-west of St Arnaud at the time. Says his father was John. Married Elizabeth Benson. Just trying to locate the place and checking if his birth record is accurate. Many thanks

They are not names that I've heard of - unless it is a farm or a smallholding.  Could it be Warden?

Thanks, will have to check and get back to you.
The Father, John Hirst, was an architect according to that MC.
Do you perhaps know of any architects working in Northumbria about that time?
cheers

May be the name of a farm. Certainly looks like Wardal or Wardel; may be Mardal or Mardel; Hardel or Hardal. Checked Genuki's placenames but none to find in Northumberland; not found in the 1891 Census either.
Mind you could not find William Hirst or John Hirst Northumberland in the 1841, 1851, 1861 Censuses.
Cheers anyway.

Your best bet to find an architect would be through trade directories of the time.  The University of Leicester have a searchable data base covering some of these online.  It should come up if you google it.

Thanks Christine, I'll try that.
Maybe I need to check Warden as the place.
Cheers.

Is it possible for you to post a snip of the document showing the place-name?

Now why didn't I think of that  :-[

We'll have a better chance of trying to figure it out if we can see it

Great idea - let's see if it works.
My error - William's father was Joshua, not John. Sorry
Ok. my machine is refusing to deal with Attachments and other options.
Can't do a simple cut and paste either.
