stockton durham 1841 census
« on: Thursday 09 October 14 18:22 BST (UK) »
Could someone look at the 1841 census for Thomas Hutchinson age 25 and see if they think he is in a workhouse. There is a list of names some of them same surname, others not. On the images for place it just has "do" and I can`t see the other pages to see what the place is. Thanks, Roberta

"do" i.e. ditto is for High Street. Street numbering systems did not become formalised in most towns until the 1850s. Census enumerators were given very clear instructions with regard to the provision of address data. In 1841 it was only necessary to give the name, if any, of the house, part of the town, village or hamlet in which it stood.

Hi Stan, something on the original I had not seen before it showed many of the girls with this Hutchinson family as FSS and not FS which I know is Female Servant is there a FSS ( as that is what it looks like)?

;D Do not worry yourself Stan, just re-looked the 3rd "S" is an enumerators checking tick followed by a small x

Hi again, re-reading your PM you do not have the marriage certificate, here is the above marriage:-

18th September 1843 St Hilda, Middlesbrough

Thomas Hutchinson Full Age occ Moulder Father John Hutchinson occ Labourer
Jane Rowell Full Age Father John Rowell occ Labourer
Both resident Middlesborough

Not helping with Thomas in 1841 ( could be anywhere including Army) but is this Jane?

1841 census

Jane Rowell 30?
Jane 20
John 18
Herriet 16
Mary 11
Thomas 9
Anne 6 b Durham
Ellene 4 b Durham
Richard Stainsby 25
All other than shown Not born in County
Residing at High Yard, Stockton
Census ref HO107/317/ 29/17 / 28

As Jane gives her pob as Yarm in 1851/61 then this looks to be her baptism:-

Jane Rowell 3rd January 1821 Egglescliffe Father John Mother Jane
Pelly/Pelley/Kingsbury/Challis/Nalder/Rochester/Raydenbow
