Spurgeon/Horton, Lewes, late 1700s
« on: Sunday 12 October 14 21:35 BST (UK) »
Henry Spurgeon married Ruth Horton at St. Anne's, Lewes in February 791. They had one known child; Maria, born that August and baptised at St. Michael's. Maria married William Death, a Suffolk man who was later to fight at Waterloo.

And that's all I have on this line! I can't find any truly feasible origins for either Henry or Ruth, so any help would be gratefully appreciated!

Hi,

Thanks for that. I came across it a whire back, but thought that the 30 mile distance between the two, plus the fact that Maria seemed to remain in Lewes (she married there in 1808) sort of ruled this one out.

I wouldnt rule this out at all.
Ruth is born Lewes at the right time to marry 1791.
Brides usually married in their own Parish.

We have no idea where Henry was born or his Occp.
They may have moved back and forth between the 2 places.

I have Children in my Tree born Northumberland/Essex to the same Parents. He was a Gardiner.

If you can find a Ruth Horton born c 1765 Lewes it might sort this out.

Henry "Spargeon"and Ruth Horton married by licence.  Both 21+ and he is an ostler.  Both of the parish of St Anne.
The baptism for Maria states that she is "brought into St Michaels"

Could this burial be your Ruth?   Might be worth seeing if the death certificate has any further details.

I managed to miss these:
Ruth SPURGIN born c 1765 Lewes, Sussex, Widow.
Living with Daug Mary born c 1795, Croydon, Surrey, now Mrs DYER.
They are in Brighton, Sussex
HO107/1645/321/31

Not sure I quite understand what this record is, or how to find it! Is there a date on it? Ruth's birth place would seem to help to confirm her as mine. Still a bit odd to have two children named Maria and Mary at this time, though! However, returning to Brighthelmstone does put her closer to where she was married, which is useful...

Any occupations or in/out of census data available for Ruth and the Willchards in the 1841 census?

Great! Thanks. Great to have an occupation for Henry.

"The baptism for Maria states that she is "brought into St Michaels""
What would the technical definition for this be? That she was poor, thus needed permission to move parishes?

"Ruth  SPURGEON    AGE  92y  / Burial Date  20th Nov    1856"
Certainly could be! The birth date would be spot on with what we'd expect. What a long lived old lady she turned out to be. I'll be ordering this when finances are more cheerful! Thank you!

HO107/1645/321/31 - 1851 Census

No occupation for Ruth in 1841
James Willchard looks to be a Pensioner, possibly Army
Sarah Killam (Pillam?) occupation Ind. - of Independent means, which possibly means that she was a lodger or boarder with the family,
