Back again,

I havn't looked at all the photo's on your link Bryan but I did find the answer to what the lad on the platform is doing.

He's swinging the lead, for plumbing the depth of water.

PS, and to think I used to drive down Bell Lane every week to deliver soft drinks and confectionary to the college kitchen. Just didn't go far enough. All the ground where the furthest football pitches are has been built over now.

We've now worked out that late father-in-law was at St Vincent Jul 1930 to Nov 1931. Actually found him on one of the 1931 'In the Gym' pictures.

The original postcard image (above) is of Gunnery Park, so where were the main buildings, parade ground etc, that we see in many other photos in relationship to this, please ?

Good evening,

The main gate to the barracks was on Forton rd. The gate and guard rooms is all that is left now. Behind them was the parade ground, on the left backing on to Mill lane were the large barrack blocks with the mast in front. I think your photo was probably taken from the upper floor of the last block, but there were other buildings beyond the them.

To the right is Ferrol Rd. I believe the buildings backing on to this were the teaching blocks.Somewhere beyond them is the present day fuel depot and the remains of another set of barracks which straddled Forton Rd.

If you look on Google maps it still shows as a large empty expanse although the college buildings occupy the space once taken by the barrack blocks and square.

Yes, I can see it now. Had only looked at the Gunnery Park area on Google maps. Now looked at Forton Road and it all makes sense.

John ... many thanks for all your help.
