James MacDonald, Pte 28599  11th Bn, The Cameronian (Scottish Rifles)
Born: 13 October, 1880, Glasgow, Scotland
Killed in Action:  8 May, 1917 Salonika.
Buried:  Doiran British Cemetery (on the Greek border with Macedonia)

Little is known of James, other than these barest details.  He was married to Anna Marshall and had 2 children, Douglas and Frances Marshall MacDonald.  His mother had lost 3 sons in infancy; his brother, John, survived the war.


We will remember him.  RIP.

Thank you for posting the information on James and remembering him. He was my Great Grandfather.

I would like to correct/add to the information.

James was indeed married to Anna Marshall with 1 child, Anna Law Marshall MacDonald, my Grandmother.

James’ Father was Douglas MacDonald and his Mother was Janet Hunter who had 6 other children together.

Anna Marshall’s Mother and Father were Anna Law and Francis Marshall.

James died at the first battle of Doiran on 8th May 1917. His body was never found and grave not known since the Bulgarian army buried a lot of the British dead as they repelled the British advances. He is commemorated at the Doiran Monument near the cemetery alongside some 2173 other soldiers who also died and were never recovered.

No problem.  I should have stressed that I actually know quite a lot about James' parents, as they were my other half's great-grandparents.  If you send me a PM with your e-mail address, I can 'invite' you onto Ancestry to see the MacDonald tree. which has now been extended back to the mid 17th century to encompass the Haig family (Field Marshall Earl Haig from WWI)...illustrious relatives indeed - though on such a distant twig as to be insignificant!
