A bunch of missing Hamnetts
« on: Thursday 06 November 14 15:52 GMT (UK) »
Hi All
I have my Hamnett family on the 1871 Census : William Hamnett Spouse Mary Hamnett.Children James (28) John (18) Sarah E, (16) William (6) Charles (3) who is my Great Grandad, and George (2). Living in Gorton Manchester .................................by 1881 they seem to have all vanished!
Obviously this cannot have happened, but I am at a loos as where to find them. I have checked poor house records but they are not there,
Any clues would be very helpful.
Thanks and regards
Josie

As Charles is your greatgrandfather, do you have him in 1891, 1901, 1911, and who does he marry?

Thank-you

Added:
George is actually 2 months not 2 years on 1871, so he appears to be missing from that 1881 census.

Josie,
Am I correct please in saying your great grandfather Charles HAMNETT married Mary CARDWELL?

In 1891 this couple are still living in Gorton Manchester where they were both born.
Charles is a fitter’s labourer.

The address is 23 Grantham St.

Both daughters, Margaret aged 3 and Mary aged 6 months were born there too.

Mother-in law John (obviously not quite correct!) CARDWELL aged 47 is with them.

There is an error on the enumerator’s  recording of the information regarding “John”?? and the word mother is amended in pencil to add “in law”

Josie,
I believe the oldest child on the 1971 census image is James aged 21 years. It is difficult to read, but if his father is aged 39 years in 1871 and mother Mary 40 years, as listed, they would not have a 28 year old son.

Hi Barbara,
May I ask you for more details on you 1881 census finding.
I have tried to duplicate your search, but no success ::)

I am interested to know about the two children you mention on the entry as it may help Josie to trace them forward.

With thanks,
Sue

Hi Sue
we have to be very careful here as there are a number of Hamnett families in the area and not very imaginative with names! We have a number of Charles/William and James,
The first James I can find married Charlotte Singleton in 1799 their son Charles b.1804 married Mary Taylor in 1831 she is the mother of William his second wife is Justinia Scholes Dearden m 1868.William married Mary Taylor .
My tree is public on Ancestry
Thanks for all the help
Josie
