1841/51/61 lookups, please: Charles, Thomas, & John Groome
« on: Saturday 02 July 05 04:01 BST (UK) »
Hello again:
For this branch of our family from Steyning, I have four generations of one child per generation.  By the 1841/51/61 censuses, I hope to fill a few of those generations out a bit.  Could someone help me try to find the following Groome family members, please?
- John Groome, born c.1826 at Steyning; wife, Eliza; probably continued to reside at Steyning, as he was found there in the 1881 census.
- Charles Groome, born c.1800; probably resident at Steyning, but possibly at Broadwater or Sompting.
- Thomas Groome, born c.1785??; probably resident at Steyning, but possibly at Broadwater or Sompting.
Many thanks in advance, for considering my lookup request,
Alison Causton

Hello, Darcy:
Thank you very much for these extracts ... answers a couple of mysteries, including the name of Charles' wife :)
Does the "RG9" reference indicate that these came from the 1861 census?
Regards,
Alison

Oh sorry ... I just noticed that you very clearly indicated that these were 1861 census items ::).
Thanks again, Darcy.

Hi Allison,  :)

yes, I was a bit late indicating which census it was. ;D

I have had no luck in finding Thomas born c1785 but there might be a connection here -

Thomas Groom, head, mar, 53, Ag Lab, Steyning Sussex
Hannah, wife, 57, Clapham
Thomas, son, 18, Ag Lab, SteyningSussex
Mary Bishep, visitor, 14, scholar, Patching Sussex

Hello again, Darcy:
I'm inclined to believe that this is a related connection, but I will have to order in the parish register films for Upper Beeding and for Steyning to sort these Groomes out.
Thank you for this additional lead :),

Alison,

I had a look at FreeBMD. There is a death for a Thomas Groome in Worthing Sussex.

                       Dec Quarter 1857 -  Volume 2b  Page 164.

Worthing seems to be the Somping/Broadwater area where you thought Thomas might be.

Could explain why I haven't found him in 1861.

Hi, Darcy -
We know that Thomas was at Broadwater, and this death date fits with an extract from an extract from “A History of Sussex”, Vol VI, Part 1, edited by T.P. Hudson and pub. 1980.  This publication has been digitised and posted to a web site called “British History Online” at http://british.history.ac.uk/.
I'll have to add the Broadwater parish registers to my "to do" list :D.
Thanks for pointing this out, Darcy.
Regards,
Alison (who should really be toddling off to bed...)
