GRAY: 1850-1880: Registration of Births in Batheaston & Walcot
« on: Sunday 09 November 14 16:11 GMT (UK) »
Hello Researchers

I have recently read with considerable interest a thread which involves the same family of ancestors that I have recently been researching.

There are eleven offspring born between 1856 & 1880, with one exception the BathBMD listing shows the Sub-District as being Batheaston, the one exception showing the Sub-District as "Walcot - First Series".

Is the Sub-District simply an office where the births were registered, or is there some more significant spin-off that might relate to the Place of Birth?

Should you want to see the string of births using BathBMD:
select the years 1855 through to 1881
select the Surname: GRAY
select the Mother's Maiden Name: ALLEN: press Display

You should ignore the entries for Twerton as these individuals 'appear' to have no direct connection with my current research.  Unless of course I'm missing something significant!

I'm guessing (assuming) they are a family where the parents have similar names, none of the Twerton individuals appear on any census sheets I have seen with Charles & Eliza (GRAY) as the parents.

I look forward to any explanations concerning the Sub-District.

Thank you JohnG.
Swansea.

The registration district was Bath, the Superintendent Registrar and Registrar of Marriages was at Charles Street, Bath, the Registrars sub-districts for Births and Deaths were Walcot, Abbey, Lyncombe and Widcombe, Bathwick, Batheaston  and Twerton, with offices in each.
The office for Walcot for the registration of births and deaths, was originaly at Axford Buildings, Bath.
In Kelly's Directory of Somerset, 1889 the registrar of births and deaths for the Walcot sub-district was at 30 Paragon.

Batheaston is a village about 2 miles or so from Bath.

Children were supposed to be registered at the office of the sub-district in which they were born, even if the parents were only there temporarily. I believe in some circumstances they could report the birth at their "home" office, but the details would be passed to the "birth" office and still registered there. So the place of registration does usually reflect the place of birth.

The Walcot subdistrict covered the eastern part of the city (north of the river) while Batheaston covered the villages in the strip to the North and East between the city and the Gloucestershire and Wiltshire boundaries, including Bathford. Looking at the 1881 census all the children are shown as  born in Bathford except for Willie in Bath.  That is completely consistent with the BathBMD results.

The Twerton registrations appear to be children of Eli Gray and Mary Allen, a different family.

Thank you one and all,

Now the footprint of the sub-districts has been explained I understand more clearly what's happened.

Thank you, JohnG, Swansea.
