Kingston-upon-Hull Lookups Please - LIMEBURNER and GIBSON
« on: Wednesday 12 November 14 02:39 GMT (UK) »
Hello forum readers, hope you're having a marvellous day filled with breakthrough family history research discoveries. :)

I've happily married into a branch of the LIMEBURNER family that was formerly based around the London dockyards, but now living north of Sydney, Australia.

I reckon I've linked the London dockside Limeburners back to a family of mariners from Kingston-upon-Hull.  I think John LIMEBURNER - who was ultimately a Trinity pilot - was originally based in Hull, running trade ships between England and continental Europe.  John was widowed (at least once) before marrying Mary Anne EDWARDS in 1789 in St Dunstan's Stepney.  I believe John and Mary Anne may have had a son Matthew, about a decade later.  It seems Matthew sadly died in 1801.

I think young Matthew was perhaps named for Matthew LIMEBURNER, another mariner, who it seems may have had a large family in Hull.  I believe Matthew married Mary GIBSON at Holy Trinity Hull in the 1730s, and perhaps their son John (born 1749) is the John Limeburner mentioned in the para above.

First and foremost today, I am interested in any relevant BMDs for the LIMEBURNER family of, and including, Matthew.  (A birth for Matthew would be awesome, because it may help to link him to another maritime Limeburner - but that's altogether another theory!!!  8)

Any BMDs that may relate to Mary GIBSON or her family would also be of interest.

Many, many thanks in advance  ;D,

Limeburner Mitchell

Hello Warncoort!

BMD certificates were not introduced until 1 Jul 1837,Parish Registers will be your source.Quick look here  https://familysearch.org/search
has Limeburner across England.

You are quite correct to pick up my slackness with genealogical terminology!  I was referring to "BMD" interchangeably with baptisms, marriages and burials.   :D

Of course, my interest in parishes in and around Kingston-upon-Hull certainly pre-dates civil registration!   :)

But yes, the FamilySearch transcriptions are quite interesting.  There's a number of strongly biblical - perhaps Puritan - first names like Matthew, Jeremiah, Job, Moses, and Adam appearing in Kent, Hampshire, and London (along with John, Thomas, and Joseph).  And there's Matthew Limeburners up in Ayrshire.  It would be good to know someone with access to the original registers to see whether there's any other information about their baptisms, marriages and burials that might start to link some of these branches together.

One thing I do know about our Matthew is that he had a brother Charles, another mariner, who died in 1750.  Charles wasn't married when he died, so one might presume he was born in the 1720s.  Charles bequeathed everything to his "loving brother Matthew Limeburner of Kingston-upon-Hull, mariner".

Many thanks for your interest and advice  :)

Hello CaroleW!!!

Many thanks for this:

This is from Family Search

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NRQT-D2J and he could be the child of this marriage which you mention above

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:N2JQ-P4T

I've spent a little bit of time looking at these FamilySearch transcriptions and trawling the internet for anything else that might throw light on these maritime folks.  This is definitely my John Limeburner's brother Matthew.  I agree with your supposition that he's Matthew and Mary Gibson's son.

Following your lead CaroleW  :), I looked a little further at FamilySearch.  After marrying in 1735, Matthew and Mary Gibson's family grew with the births of Jeremiah (1737), Matthew (1739), Charles (1741), Benjamin (1743), Sarah (1745) and John (1749).  The boys all appear to have become mariners.

As I mentioned in my response to Warncoort, actually having some people that can see what's on the parish records would be splendid.  I am wondering whether there might be some other baptisms, burials etc in nearby Hull parishes, other than Holy Trinity.

On the subject of burials, it seems that amongst FamilySearch's Holy Trinity transcriptions there may be a burial for Mary Limeburner (nee Gibson) in 1765: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/JD33-QQL.   And possibly one for Matthew himself (or his son) on 17 August 1787: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/JD34-7YR

That brings us neatly back to Matthew Limeburner.  Interestingly, FamilySearch includes a few "Matthew Limeburners" that appear up in Scotland.  One of those emigrates to the New England part of America.  The family in the new world appear to also be mariners.  This thread on PA-Roots.com has more about the east coast USA Lymburner/Limeburner family - http://www.pa-roots.org/data/read.php?1209,648907

Bit of a ramble, but hopefully of use to any Limeburner researchers!!!  :)

Very best,

Limeburner Mitchell, still hoping that some kind soul with access to any Hull and/or region parish registers might have a moment to check for more Limeburner activity  :)

Found several Limeburners as masters of various ships (RECOVERY, WILLIAMSON and RODNEY) in Lloyds lists from 1747 -1781. Most of the voyages mentioned were from/to London and Oporto.

Hi again all - sorry, been rudely distracted by the demands of paid employment for a bit.

That's a great lead Seaweed - many thanks!

Those ships you mention don't sound immediately familiar, which will make for interesting learnings!

Many thanks :-)
