James Callaghan

Our elusive James Callaghan is born about 1855 Mitcheltown Co Cork,.
According to his age at marriage in 1877 and what it says on a birth certificate of child,where he was born.

On his marriage in 1877 South Australia says 22 years old and father was William Callaghan.

James has 4 children with Mary Jane Fudge in South Australia.
3 of the children came to New Zealand to live.

I am aware there are possibly many with this name which makes it harder to define just who is the correct James Callaghan.

But any suggestions appreciated.

Have two of these births/baptisms, but used to buy credits and have none now.

Just not sure if they are him or not!!!

Looked at Mothers name in the two I have and James daughter, didn't have those mothers names.

If I could find his death would maybe help.
I live in hope.

Was William alive when James married?
The roots ireland site have changed their format I believe. For a 25E subscription one can access any number of records & view - this sub lasts for 1 month.

There is a death for a William Callaghan Oct Quarter 1885 Age 72 Reg District Fermoy Volume 4 Page 422. You can obtain a Photo copy of any certs from www.groireland.ie for 4€

Do you know Williams wifes name?

There was a Census compiled in 1851 for the purpose of securing old age pensions for people as Civil Registration in Ireland came in 1864 so many people didnt know their correct ages.
On looking at this Census the following:
Graig - Kilworth Co Cork (Census area known as Macroney)
William Callaghan. Age 34
Honora wife 30
Julia 6 daughter
Hanora 4 Daughter
Michael 2 Son

This would have been before James was born c. 1855 .
Kilworth is quiet near Mitchelstown so a possibility I think.

I have looked off and on over the years, but with no one to give info makes it tricky.
But then that's research with its twists and turns.

With also not knowing the country and its towns etc except off a map, also makes it not so understandable at times.

Re the census none of those names come up in the children's names either.
But then maybe they choose wider family names.

Don't know re William being alive in 1877 at James marriage.

Yes I get the newsletter from Roots Ireland and still have points where i can put in and search but the credits were handy to use.

Garden needs time at this time of year, so a months sub just now has to wait for a time I am thinking.

A long time ago I found a census in England for a William Callaghan with children. But once again just really needing to make sure have correct family. And there wasn't a mothers name with family I found, think it was Manchester.

Mind sometimes the clues are staring at us and I cant see them.
