Family Tree Maker 2006, can I upgrade? Not sure what to do?
« on: Tuesday 02 December 14 18:03 GMT (UK) »
Hello folks,  I have Family Tree Maker 2006 with years of family tree work on it.  I am not sure what kind of computer I was using when I first had it, but now I am on Windows 7 and it won't work.  Apparently I have "64 bit"  I have all my work saved on a memory stick.

If I buy Family Tree Maker 2012 upgrade, will this work for me?

Or is there any way I can go online and upgrade?

Confused :o

Hope I don't get things wrong!  :-X  I had FTM 2005 and upgraded, successfully, to FTM 2012.

Have to add that I'm still on Windows XP.  Believe it works on Windows 7 - according to blurb.  AND have to say that it takes ages to initiate - uploading apps etc.

I first used FTM 2006 on a desktop PC running XP.  Now use it on a laptop with Windows 7, 64-bit operating system.  It all works fine though I think the online resources link and Contact other Researchers link don't work, not that I ever used them.  I think I just installed the program using the disk supplied and then did copy & paste from a memory stick of the saved tree from the PC.  When I've done lots of updating on my trees on the laptop, I copy & paste the updated tree back onto the XP PC as extra backup and it is all OK.

I have heard that the 2012 version is too fiddly and not as easy to use so hope I can carry on with the 2006 version.  Wonder why yours won't work?  Perhaps someone else can advise...

My laptop is a windows 8 machine and the pc is windows 7.  I use FTM 2005 and each time we have upgraded the machines we have had no problem reinstalling, although I think at one point we had to install some patches. But whether that was going from XP to 7 or 7 to 8 I can't remember.
