Godsell Family tracing
« on: Monday 08 December 14 18:52 GMT (UK) »
i wonder if anyone can give me any advice on getting past this dead end i've hit

my Greatx3 Grandfather was Samuel Godsell, born Lambeth, Surrey circa 1827

his entry on the 1861 census is:

1861 Census

Address:
Thurlstone Bank, Penistone, Yorks

Samuel Godsell - age 33 (railway labourer)
Bridget Godsell - age 25
James Godsell - age 7 mths (son)
Catherine Finon - age 13 (visitor)

living in Yorkshire with his wife. but i canot find him at all on the 1841 or 1851 census?

ON the parish entry for the marriage in Dewsbury it states his fathers name is also Samuel Godsell , occupation Plumber and Glazier.

I cannot find an entry to match him at all on any of the census's :(

i cant find a marriage entry anywhere for a Samuel Godsell in the early 1800s to match his father

can anyone help at all, i cant think how to progress this family line back......  :'(

Hi,

There is this baptism:

8 April 1819 at British Lying-In Hospital, Holborn for a Samuel Godsell; son of Samuel and Hannah of 22 Wardour Street, Soho.  Samuel's occupation is given as glazier.      :-\

well thats even more confusing isnt it! lol i know Samuel Godsell who died in 1890 was born sometime around 1827 due to his age, but this is a bizarre coincidence isnt it...unless they had one Samuel who died, then had another child and called him Samuel as well?  :-\

Samuel Godsall m 17 May 1818 Hannah James,  Claines , Worcester
They appear to have had a daughter , Jemima 29 Jul 1827 , buried 7 Apr 1828

Hannah Godsell  buried 20 Dec 1827 Worcester

1841 census at Tame Street , Tenbury

Samuel Godsall 40 Plumber
Sarah Godsall 30
Aurther 5
Maria 3
John 2 mos.

Not sure if this is all relevant yet , but the name and occupation is quite a coincidence.

I agree it is strange how the name is almost the same with the same occupation ....but it does beg the question where is the son Samuel Godsell born circa 1827 if this is the family?  everything else does seem to add up doesnt it, she would have been just old enough to have had a child in 1827..... but there is also finding the link from Lambeth to Tenbury Wells..... :o

i can see that this particular surname is going to cause grief in the search engines>
i would not hold the age to a particular year on your search for these folk as it may be out anything up to 5 years.....
i would try a variant collection>>>>.e g cadsall codsel gadsel etc etc....... good luck with that
