Re: Possible SLEATOR/SLATOR/SLATER Armagh Burials
« on: Wednesday 10 December 14 18:40 GMT (UK) »
Hello All,
My mother was a SLEATOR, b 1904 in Belfast. Her grandfather was a William James SLATER. He joined the RIC in 1867, aged 23, and the application form states he was born in Armagh. He was a servant. He was recommended by Thos. SIMPSON J.P. who lived in the townland of Ballyard. This is south of the city of Armagh on the road to Keady. I understand the person making the recommendation had to know the applicant personally, so it is possible that William may have worked for Simpson. I believe, but have no proof, that William's parents were James SLATER and Margaret HALL. Does anyone recognise any of this?
Regards,
David Chambers, Co. Down.

My mother had cousins who she always referred to as the Slators of Armagh. I'm trying to find out more about them. I met one cousin, Joy,  in London. She lived in Balham I believe, and had a sister called Hilda. They were apparently related in some way to the artist James Sinton Sleator (he changed the spelling from Slator) and his parents, William and Margaret, were teachers who moved to Belfast in early 1900s. I am trying to confirm all this. Does it ring a bell with anyone?
