Family Tree Software advice
« on: Saturday 20 December 14 17:34 GMT (UK) »
Hi all
I am looking at upgrading my Family Tree software and am not sure which direction to go in.

I currently use Family Tree Maker 2010 and I have a subscription to Ancestry.co.uk world. I am considering getting 2014 version. However I am struggling to find anywhere that gives me a clear comparison between the Deluxe, Platinum and World Editions.

Is anyone familiar with the Family Tree Maker versions or I would consider using another tree altogether but I like the direct link to Ancestry from Family Tree Maker.

I was looking at Legacy 8.0 but have read a lot of reviews where people have said they don't like this version.

I was also looking at Roots Magic but have reviews that the reporting is not brill.

Thanks in advance
CP

The only difference between the Deluxe, Platinum and Worldwide editions relates to the type and length of free subscription to ancestry.  Platinum has 6 months UK Essentials subscription, Worldwide has 6 months worldwide subscription, I think Deluxe may have 3 months UK but this would need checking.  The software itself is exactly the same.

There is also Family Historian - http://www.family-historian.co.uk/.  Haven't upgraded yet but I've been using FH v5 for almost two years having changed from FTM 2012.  I do have a copy of FTM 2014 but that was to get the 6 months worldwide subscription as didn't want to pay for 12 months at that time.

Thanks smudwhisk, that was what I thought might be the case with FTM but could not find the info anywhere.

I will look at the link

Your help is very much appreciated.

There are details of what is included in which version on S&N's website - http://www.rootschat.com/links/01eed/.

The Deluxe version apparently only has 3 months of Essentials Subscription, which are records post 1837.

Also note that 2014 is very much like the ancestry interface. I upgraded from 2012 to 2014 last time because I preferred the family view rather than Pedigree View that 2012 is limited to.

Thanks for the extra info on the tree format.

Would anyone know if you are restricted to the amount of times you can download the software if I go that route instead of buying the disk? I am probably going to upgrade my computer soon and may want to again in a few years.

I suspect you may only be able to download it once, or for a short period of time, so you would need to ensure you keep a copy of the installation file for any future use.  I've had to reinstall FTM on the odd occasion and, as panic, never had an issue but I've always had the CD.  As long as you retain a copy of the installation file which you download, I wouldn't have thought you would have an issue.
