Joseph Elliott was born 1842, and died 16 Apr 1909. He married (1) Sarah Armstrong. He married (2) Ann (Elliott) Forster. He is buried in Carlisle Cemetery.

Trying to find his parents and brothers and sisters. Trying to confirm Ann Forsters correct name, some of my family think that she might have been an Armstrong too? Any details about Sarah Armstrong?

I can not find any of them as a family on the Census, most of my details are from a family bible

Children of Joseph Elliott and Ann (Elliott) Forster are:

1/Annie Jane Elliott, b. 1866, d. 21 Jan 1942
2/William Elliott, b. 03 Apr 1868, 3 Sandhills Lane, Kirkdale 11, d. 25 Nov 1946.
3/Mary Elliott, b. 1870.
4/Elizabeth Elliott, b. 1874, d. 29 Jan 1953.

No we have no wedding certificates, just the names in the bible. As yet I can't find them on any census

Robert Elliott, b. 10 Apr 1885, Southernby, Castle Sowerby d. 24 Aug 1970 (Is the only one we really know anything about)

and

Annie Jane Elliott, b. 1866, d. 21 Jan 1942 she married Joseph Thomlinson on 29 Dec 1897 in Parish of Orton, Cumberland (This is in the IGI but doesn't name the husband, if they had not died in NZ we would not know where they married)

*Orton is Great Orton Parish in the IGI

Looks like I need to obtain Robert Elliotts 1885 birth cert:

This will give you date and place of birth, full name and maiden surname of the mother, forename(s) and sex of the child the informant's name, address and relationship to the child, full name and occupation of the father if married to the mother (or if he attended with the mother and signed the registration entry) from 1969, the place of birth of both parents.

Found 1891 Census

Caldbeck, Cumberland, Rough Close
Joseph Elliott 48 Farmer born Bew Castle, Cumberland
Ann Elliott 48 born Bew Castle, Cumberland
Elizabeth Elliott 14 born Broadfields, Cumberland
Joseph 11 born Broadfields, Cumberland
John 9 born Broadfields, Cumberland
Arthur 7 born Broadfields, Cumberland
Robert 5 born Broadfields, Cumberland

Cross reference: Ann Beloved Wife of Joseph Elliott
who died at rough Close, Caldbeck January 23 1893 aged 50 years - Carlisle Cemetry (So this census is good)

The birthplaces appear to be a bit dubious cf to family records
*Bewcastle is a large civil parish in the City of Carlisle
*Broadfields is in Dalston Parish

Wemyss/Crombie/Laing/Blyth (West Wemyss)
Givens/Normand (Dysart)
Clark/Lister (Dysart)
Wilkinson/Simson (Kettle or Kettlehill)

I might have found something
Marriage
February 23 1866 CJ
At Nichol Forest on the 17th inst by licence, Mr Joseph Elliott, London Road to Miss Ann Forster, Road, Nichol Forest

Annie Jane Elliott was born in 1866

* Nichol Forest Chapelry is a part of Kirkandrews on Esk Parish, being the northeastern portion of the parish and bordering on the parishes of Bewcastle

and this a poaching story 'The Death of William Forster' Tragedy in Nichol Forest, a farmer shot by a poacher James Armstrong
http://www.longtown19.co.uk/marriages_1860___1869.73.html#The%20Death%20of%20William%20Forster

The victim was William Foster (of Browne Knowe) son of Mr Foster of 'The Nook', Nichol forest and he was the brother of Arthur Forster of Carlile. His wife's name was Elizabeth McIlrick (she was from Bush on Esk and her parents from Glenluce, Wigtownshire)
(wonder if they are relatives of Ann Forster?)

Bewcastle may be in the civil parish of City of Carlisle, but its not part of the city, but it is nearer to Nichol Forest parish.
