Birmingham - Parish Poor Law
« on: Wednesday 07 January 15 14:10 GMT (UK) »
Are there many surviving poor law or workhouse documents dated prior to 1835?

I'm searching for a William Mitchell, age unknown, who was buried at St. Martin's Church, Birmingham, received from the parish workhouse. I'm looking for anything that would give his age, occupation or place of residence before entering the workhouse.

Also, Jane Michall who was buried aged 64, 21 September 1829, St. Martin's. Again from the workhouse.

Thanks Jim,

Do you know if they went up in flames during the fire at the Birmingham Library, in 1879?

I found this from 1797 : The State of the Poor; Or, An History of the Labouring Classes in England, from the Conquest to the Present Period

The extract is from the minute books which don't give personal details.
In 1879 the inmate books would still have been with the Workhouse.
When they were destroyed isn't clear. It may have been during the paper shortage when much of this kind of stuff was pulped.
