Adam and John Burgess, arrived Melbourne Dec 1863
« on: Wednesday 07 January 15 21:12 GMT (UK) »
Hi all  :)

I've started looking at my tree again and find quite a few of my Scottish relatives came over to Australia (I thought that they'd all gone to Canada!)

Two of my cousins, Adam (19) and John Burgess (17) left Liverpool on the Great Victoria   on an unassisted package, arriving  Melbourne 26 Nov 1863.  Although they say they were 'English' on the manifold, Adam was born circa 1844 in Castle Douglas, Kirkcudbrightshire (or Dumfries!)  and John was born Sept q,  1846 in West Derby, Liverpool after their parents moved there.

I've done some searching on Ancestry and FS records but can't find them after this. Their sister, Margaret, arrived there in 1858 on the Sarah Dixon and married in Geelong in 1864 (see  http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=708953.0 ) Their parents were Adam Burgess (watchmaker/silversmith) and Elizabeth Payne,  who remained in Liverpool, with two other children.

I have all the information on them and the family before this but would like help to find what happened to Adam and John  after they arrived.

Thanks for any help.

Did either of them have a second name Gadget??

There are some Adam Burgess  showing up on Electoral Rolls but Adam Stanely and Adam James as well as just plain old Adam.

Adam (without other name) is in Broken Hill in 1895 - at Lime Siding - all sorts of marks on the page about which I know nothing!  See snip.  There are only 12 entries for Adam Burgess on the electoral rolls for the time frame I looked.

There is one marriage for Adam Burgess in South Australia in 1864 -  :-\   The others seem to be too late of too early.   :-\ :-\

Lots of marriages for various John Burgess.

I am out of my depth here - need some of the good Aussie detectives on the job!

Thanks, Wiggy  :)

What do the signs mean- are they marks on the gold or whatever?

I don't think that Adam had a middle name - if he did, it would be most likely to be James, Thomas, William,  John or George.

Sent you a couple of snips via email.

I am totally out of my depth - need people who are good at this.

Don't know what the marks mean - Broken Hill is not a gold place - it is a Silver Lead and Zing city.  (and I know A is Argent in French and could be a sign for silver - but there are lots of other things it could be also)

 - I've never seen a page like this before - it is before Australian federation (in 1901), but came up on the voters lists - so I don't know if this means he had some property which made him elegible to vote??

Someone will know.  ;)

Thanks for snips.

I don't think the Adam ones are him as my Adam's parents were Adam and Elizabeth  :-\

Hi,
The little images look like cattle/stock  brands.

That's a good thought Leanne!!    :)

Might he have gone on to NZ Gadget - There is a death in Napier NZ of a Melbourne man Adam Burgess - ages 31 in 1874.  At the home of Mr Sutton.

Better go and do the shopping . . . . .

Gadget I worked out last night who were the BURGESS immigrants in 1863 from your thread on the NZ board and thought it was the family on the 1861 census in West Derby. Cannot can find any further evidence of Adam in Australia.  He isn't the Adam in Broken Hill or SA.

Too many John BURGESS's on the indexes to identify yours, ie if he is actually listed.

Have you considered they may have travelled to NZ or USA or even returned to the UK?

Have attached the heading from the NSW Gov Gazette for Stock Brands

Thanks for looking, cando.

I've not found anything so far back in UK. I'm now doing global searches to see what comes up. Found a burial  in New Zealand  - Napier Courthouse ~ Hawkes Bay

4 Nov 1874  died Napier: Burgess, Adam 30 years.

Could be. Right age anyway! - it's getting late here so will have a look at all the other listings tomorrow.
