Advice on posting broad lookup request on Rootschat
« on: Thursday 08 January 15 07:28 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find my great grandmother's marriage that took place sometime between 1913-1923.  The marriage is not listed in the national index - unless the names have been badly mis-transcribed.  I only have the general area of the Lake District and the fact that it was most likely a Catholic marriage.

My question is this:  Can i post multiple lookup requests; each one specifying a different Catholic parish location in the Lake District; e.g. "Lookup Request - Garvey/Hammond marriage 1913-1923 - Dalton in Furness".

[First Names: Loretta Teresa & George William; catholic church in Dalton is 'Our Lady of the Rosary']

I believe the only way to access this information (registers not deposited and not microfilmed by LDS) is to visit the locations which is not feasible for me any time soon because I am in CANADA.  And because Loretta's daughter, my grandmother, is now 92; I am really hoping to get some help finding this info sooner rather than later.

Advice, please Rootschatters.  (I am asking for advice on this, because the last time I tried to do something along these lines on Rootschat, I was directed to keep it as a single topic.)

I would suggest you post it in the common room and include as much detail as possible.

You could start by trying posting a single look-up request to the Cumberland board and see what advice you get there. There may be a county archive where someone can do all of the lookups for you.

It may be better in the Common room as already suggested by Panda - As she wasn't living in Cumberland in the last census she could have been married anywhere including Scotland and Gretna

If the marriage took place anywhere in England or Wales it WILL be included on the GRO Indexes (as seen on FreeBMD) because, by law, all marriages must be registered.

However, those indexes do not include Scotland, Northern Ireland, Ireland or the Isle of Man!

Scotland looks to be the best bet.
And that means a lookup on Scotland's People - as Craclyn said.

births for this couple 1913 + should show mother's family name, but I am not seeing them.

For the marriage you are looking for, start with  location of the first birth to your couple.
