BLACK, Carnwath early 19th Century
« on: Friday 09 January 15 13:29 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to gather more information about the family of my 2x Gr Gr father, JOHN BLACK who was born 20th March 1803 in CARNWATH, married ELIZABETH THOMPSON in CURRIE, Midlothian on 18Th July 1837 and died in EDINBURGH on 17th Dec 1887.
They ha 10 children, as far as I am aware:
Marion              1839 - 1843
John                 1842 - ?
William              1845 - 1905 ,  my Great Gr Father
Robert               1846 - 1920
Jean                  1848 - 1851
Andrew              1850 - 1935
Ann Margaret      1852 - 1920
Hugh                  1855 - 1937
Elizabeth            1857 - 1857
Elizabeth Alison   1859 - 1898
In the 1861 census William & Robert were working on their Uncle Robert's farm in the village of Carstairs, but after that I can find no trace of Robert!  Are there descendants of Robert's still farming in Lanarkshire?
What happened to John (b 1842):  did Marion die from typhoid
any help would be appreciated
regards

Robert was a stonemason in the 1871 census and a law clerk in 1881, 1891 & 1901 census.

I don't think he ever married

Hard to say if any of his descendants are farming in the county, but then there are only a few Black's out there.  A quick look at the BT directory and there are 16 families in the Carstairs area and there will be many more not listed.  192.com, one of not so favorite sites, lists 48.  I can tell you that Robert the farmer owned a small house and Garden in Carstairs and that the farm he rented was called Eastend owned by the Monteith's who owned most of the Parish during this era.  You can see the farm on the a map here: http://maps.nls.uk/view/82893870 on earlier maps it is not identified, likely because it was seen as part of the village. Google maps will likely show it. The current owner is not a Black.

A bit unusual for a stonemason to become a law clerk

The Family firm were stonemasons, and perhaps he did not want to follow the family, as there were a number of siblings to carry on.
