Where is Ganley
« on: Monday 12 January 15 09:29 GMT (UK) »
John Booth, born abt 1834, Dublin, came to Birmingham, England, where he married Mary Hughes, also born abt 1834. in 1853. On successive census returns Mary names her place of birth as Ganley, Ireland. Try as I might I can't find Ganley on any map of Ireland. Please can anyone help?

Any information relating to either Damiel or mary would also be greatly appreciated.

has 2 possible baptisms for a John Booth in Dublin, one in 1831, the other in 1834
Could any of the Ganley on other Census returns be read as Galway?

Is 'Damiel' supposed to be Daniel? if so, who is Daniel?

It really doesn't look like the name of any county in Ireland and I can't find any Irish townland that comes close.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Should have put brain in gear. Too many Booths kicking around in my head. Daniel was actually John.

Thanks to both for your assistance.

On successive census returns Mary names her place of birth as Ganley, Ireland.

Hi, what does it look like on the other successive census returns?  What you've posted looks like the 1861 return, can you tell me where to find this family in the census returns for 1871, 1881 etc. - I couldn't find them and I wouldn't mind a look?

Gaffy,

I thought I had seen a return which said Ganley, Ireland, rather than what you correctly say is the 1861 return, which says Irland (sic), Ganley but I'm not finding it at the moment. I think I have her unmarried, as Mary Hughes on the 1851 census but that only gives her birthplace as Ireland. The address is Court 10, 4 House, Slaney Street, where the Hughes family is lodging with the Feeney family. Ref HO 107 2057

Since John Booth was living with Eliza Orme, formerly Lovett, by 1863 and the christening of his youngest child with Mary Hughes was in 1860 there is a distinct possibilty that Mary had died between these dates, though I can't find a death registration.
