John Bateman, teacher, in Wilcox co., Alabama 1860 Census
« on: Friday 23 January 15 03:01 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for any information about John Bateman who appears in the 1860 Federal census in East Division, Wilcox County, Alabama (Post office: Rehoboth).  He is living in the home of John Celery (Jno. Celery in the census) and he is listed as a teacher, age 35, born in Ireland.   If he was a teacher, would there be any employment records in the state archives related to his employment?   Tom

It might be worth contacting the local library to see if they can help you with a list of 1860s schools.  The Wilcox County capital is Camden.  I haven't found a website for the library but it is at:

    100 Broad St
    Camden, AL 36726
    United States

    Phone number +1-334-682-5437

Hope this helps

Philip, Thank you for the suggestion. I will write to the library to see if they might have any information.   I did find a service record for a John Bateman, who joined Captain Jenkins' Company, Mounted Rifles, Alabama Volunteers in Wilcox county, in 1861, aged 36.  Based on the age similarity to the 1860 census, this looks like it could be the same John Bateman as in the 1860 census.  This unit later became D Company, 3rd Regiment, Alabama Cavalry.   I would love to find out what became of him after 1861.

I should have written: "I can't see a helpful website" - I couldn't see one that gave an e-mail contact for the library.

Thank you for the website links. I had seen these before, but did not see an email link on them, however I have found an email address for the Wilcox co. library and hopefully it is still valid.
