I think I have found Henry.
1851, HO107/1753/15/22, Tempsford Beds,

Henry COLE in the household of John & Susannah Allen as nephew born Rosebworth (Ancestry) although the place name has been changed to Knebworth.

Same place in 1841 with same family, HO107/2/25/11.

Family Search has a baptism for Henry COLE 10th June 1832 in Knebworth, parents James & Elizabeth.

Looks like he may have just adopted an S on the end of his surname at some stage.

It's looking more & more like this Henry is not from the Cole(s) line I am following but the marriage certificate will confirm his father. Will post the details in due course.

Ummm, now I'm not so sure as there is a Henry Cole married to a Louisa in Tilbury on the 1871 who is either born Kensworth or Knebworth depending on which census, with children born Tempsford Beds. I'm thinking he could be the one I found with the Allen family.

Will look again, but I did find Joseph Slaughter, from the newspaper article, living in Bushey born St Stephens in the 1851 & 61 census so you would think that Henry should be in that vicinity somewhere.

It's never straightforward, is it? Worst case scenario is that the Henry of interest doesn't name a father on the marriage cert because he doesn't know

You are so right, this isn't a straightforward case. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if there is no father on Henry's marriage cert, fingers crossed there is one named.

Purely out of interest I had a look at the only Coles family in Rickmansworth in 1841, Samuel & Alice with daughter Eliza & son James. Although it would appear that the son James states born New York in further census daughter Eliza was born Leighton Buzzard & I think I have found another daughter Mary Ann who marries in L/B 1839. Looking like the family moved from L/B into Ricky round about 1840, funny thing L/B is not a million miles from Kensworth. They are probably a complete red herring as far as Henry goes but he must belong to somebody surely.

Looking forward to hearing what the marriage cert reveals.

Just realised as this is a look up board I can't post a snippet of the certificate. The parents you found, Maddie [thanks for looking], don't fit into the Coles family I have so 'fraid I'll just have to declare this a 'dead' end

Oh isn't that just typical. There's every chance he could have been non existent as well as being dead.

Don't suppose the witnesses give any clues, do they.

It is looking like it's a no - hoper.

Witnesses George Dobson [made mark] & Mary Ann Theed [possibly baptised 1822 in Rickmansworth, can't find her on censuses].

That's funny, I recognise the Dobson & Theed names from somewhere, will have to check them out, but why would Mary Ann sign herself as Theed, ah bless, she must have forgotten she was married.
