Henry COLES born ca 1832
« on: Friday 23 January 15 17:55 GMT (UK) »
A fresh pair of eyes please....

I am helping a 96 yr old cousin of my mother's to trace his father's Coles tree & I would love to be able to identify a few new rellies for him. His father's 3 brothers all died in WW1.

I am stuck on Henry Coles [not a direct ancestor of the 96 yr old] but a possible source of living rellies!!!

1861 RG09/787/6/6 [transcribed as Cotes on ancestry]
Henry aged 26 born Rickmansworth farm labourer
Caroline aged 21 born Bushey
Henry aged 6/12 born Caldicot

1871 RG10/1380/54/17
Henry aged 38 born Herts, Kensworth [?Rickmansworth as Kensworth is in Bedfordshire]
Caroline aged 32 born Herts, Bushey
5 children all born Aldenham

This is probably his marriage:
Marriages Jun 1860
Coles    Henry        Watford    3a   371
Monk    Caroline        Watford    3a   371
I have just sent for this certificate, so will be able to tell you his father's name & occupation in about a week.

and death:
Deaths Sep 1874
COLES    Henry    43    Watford    3a   218

HOWEVER....I cannot find this man in 1841 or 1851, nor can I find a baptism on familysearch, ancestry or FindMyPast.

Can anyone please help? Many thanks.

Josey

Hi

Kensworth (Beds) is only just outside the Herts border, so I wouldn't discount it, yet

Knebworth could be a possibility if the census taker scribbled his notes and then had difficulty reading them back.
There is a 10Jun1832 Henry birth in Knebworth to James&Elizabeth, and one in Kensworth

There are also a smatterring of 1831-41 births in Watford [ Rickmansworth "is in" Watford ],
to enhance the "Rickmansworth" odds.

So, Marriage Certificate says?

Thank you, Ray, that's good to know about the location of Kensworth & I will look at the 2 baptisms you mention.

The line I am following is:
William Coles b ca 1804 in Marston Somerset & Sarah Simson b ca 1799 in Latchford Suffolk who married 8 May 1827 in Hertford. [As an aside - how did they both end up there?  ???]

They married & settled in Hertford Heath, Hertfordshire.
Children that I know of are
Caroline 1827 - 1881 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NY5B-B9V
Frederick Wiliam 1829 - 1836 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:J3HF-7YY
William Thomas 1833 - 1910 [my relative's line] https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NPSN-JJY
Mary 1834 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NPSJ-9VY
All film C04787-1
I have followed all of these forward & have enough information so far on them but will post individual threads on them if I get stuck.

There is a James baptised 17 Nov 1833 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JW27-LL7 film J07291-1 in Stanford, Hertfordshire to William & Sarah but I am not yet convinced he is a son of the above William & Sarah's [place different & time conflicting with William Thomas unless James was born ca 1829 & baptised as a toddler, in which case why not baptise him with William Thomas born 19 Sep 1833 baptised on 7 Aug 1834?].  I may buy the certificate of marriage between James Cole [no s but father William Cole] & Caroline Reeks father Mark https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:N64V-JY9 film M07243-3 to see this father William's occupation. 'My' William was in 1841 watchman, 1851 gamekeeper, 1861 gen serv, 1871 labourer, 1881 gamekeeper.

Marriages Sep 1855
Cole    James        Hertford    3a   301
Reeks    Caroline        Hertford    3a   301
There is no James on the 1841 census with William, Sarah, Caroline, William & Mary.  There is however a 10 yr old James Cole living with mother Sarah in Cheshunt in 1841.

I have a feeling that Henry is not William & Sarah's son. I will post relevant details as soon as I get the marriage certificate.

Hi

Odd aside . . . . . who is Mary Duncan? A bit more than a "visitor"?

By 1861 she was an adopted daughter of William & Sarah. I haven't researched her to find out who she actually was....she was born 1840 in Great Amwell.

I found a Great Amwell baptism on ancestry - Mary Ann Duncan 16 Aug 1839 daughter of George [a porter] & Elizabeth. No Duncans in 1841 in Hertfordshire.

She may have died in 1869.

ADDED: I found Letters of Administration 27 Sep 1869, Mary Ann Duncan spinster of Hertford heath, death 6 Jul 1969, effects under £20, residuary legatee Mary Ramsay wife of David Ramsay labourer. Mary Ramsay was nee Coles, daughter of William & Sarah.

[As another aside - how did they both end up there?  ???]

1841 Herts census registrar was taken by John Simson "60", living in Bengeo
.with a son named George 33 and a daughter named Kate 30.
All "bic" unfortuantely,
