Sarah Paine b 1831 Mayfield
« on: Tuesday 03 February 15 03:45 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking for confirmation of the parents of Sarah Ann Paine, born 1831 in Mayfield, Sussex. She married first John Medhurst in 1850, second Jacob Baker in 1863. She lived in Mayfield with Medhurst and in Saleshurst with Baker (they were married in Rotherfield). I have lots of census reports on Sarah as an adult, but no indication of who her parents were. Someone on Ancestry says her father was David Paine b 1795 in Sussex and her mother was Jane Reed b 9 Nov 1794 in Heathfield, Sussex. I have evidence of this couple, but no documentation that indicates that my Sarah Ann Paine was their daughter. Does anyone know where to look to confirm or disprove? Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi Katharine, the marriage certificates would have determined just who the father of Sarah Ann was, but you are in luck:-

John Medhurst 24 Father Samuel to Sarah Ann PAYN 19 Father David Payn 1850 Mayfield, Sussex
Sarah Ann Medhurst 31 Father David Payne to Jacob Baker 27 Father John Baker 10th October 1863 Rotherfield, Sussex

In 1841 Sarah Ann is shown as aged 8 as Sarah PAIN with siblings and parents David & Jane at Colkins Mill Street, Mayfield
Census Ref HO107/1116/ 7/22 / 13

Thank-you so much, keyboard86 and Omega 1. I did not have the 1841 census or the baptism record! Do you think I can suppose that Jane/Jayne is the Jane Reed that the ancestry member has posted? I wish they had included the mothers' surnames on these documents! Was Mayfield a small enough place at the time to conclude that they would likely be the only David and Jane Paine with a daughter Sarah of about that age?

The ancestry member who posted this info claims that David Paine's (b 1795) parents were Samuel Paine (b 1765) and Elizabeth Knight (b 1763). She has Sarah's mother Jane Reed's (b 1794) parents as Thomas Reid (1764-1841) and Jane Parsons (1769-1860). I have found a birth record and 1861 census that reflects this information for Jane Reed, but nothing that ties her by her surname to David Paine.

It certainly looks like David and Jane are Sarah Ann's parents. I'm grateful for the hints and have added the info to my tree!

Thank-you omega, your work, along with keyboard86's info, has allowed me to break through a brick wall, which is always a wonderful feeling! I looked at the Sussex Family History Group and I think I will take your suggestion and join, as I have lots of ancestors from Sussex and several are brick walls. It's on my list for next payday!   ;)

Thanks again-

Katharine
