PRIVATE JOSEPH BYERS, ROYAL SCOTS FUSILIERS - SHOT AT DAWN
« on: Thursday 05 February 15 08:31 GMT (UK) »

Another sad victim of war, a volunteer. It is hoped to identify his family. I often wonder how I would have coped in similar circumstances.

Lest we forget.

This old article from 1998 sheds much more light on the affair and also gives details of his family.

The definitive book on the matter is "Blindfold and Alone"

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Blindfold-Alone-British-Military-Executions/dp/0304353973/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&sr=&qid=

30 of those executed were convicted murderers. The civilian population faced the death penalty until 1998....Although the death penalty for murder was abolished in 1965 and no hangings had taken place since 1964. Incidentally, Northern Ireland still had capital punishment for murder until 1973.
One more charge and then be dumb,
When the forts of Folly fall,
May the victors when they come
Find my body near the wall.
