Baptism in Stratford St John 1874
« on: Saturday 07 February 15 22:01 GMT (UK) »
Hi
if anyone has access to the baptisms of Stratford St John would they please do a quick look up for me? I am looking for Louisa Barber in March quarter of 1874. She and her siblings are said to be born in Stratford in the census, so I'm hoping that she will be baptised there.

Hi. No baptisms in Stratford in 1874. What makes you certain it's March quarter 1874, if it's from a census?
Jamiesons, Martins and McGonigals of Coleraine, Londonderry

Cullens, Grahams and Challenors of Dublin county and city.

Are you looking to find out her father?
Mother is Jane in 1881 census.

Could she be this birth registration Mar 1874 West Ham.

I see the problem.  Mother Jane is a widow in 1871 and 1881 census.

Family tree has her, and following siblings as Barber/Jeffrey daughter of Jane Austen and Elisha Jeffrey  ???

Hi Milliepede
Thanks for the pointer! Wow Elisha is a busy boy, and when one looks at 1881 census and 1891 census and compares the two it is obvious that Jane and Elisha are having a family together! Especially when you consider that Jane's husband Charles died in 1870 and Elisha's wife Emily died in 1871 and here they are with Louisa(1874), Ada(1877), Rose(1880) and Emily(1882)!

Nor can I find Elisha remarried in FreeBMD to anyone else after Emily in 1862. Another giveaway is that the girls change household and name between 1881 and 1891. In 1881 Ada and Rose are surname Jeffrey and living with Elisha, next door to Jane, and in 1891 they are surnamed Barber and are living with Jane at a different address, together with Elisha and his son as lodgers!

Quite the most blatant living together I have ever seen! And that certainly solves the problem of where Louisa comes from!
Thanks again
Helen

Glad it worked out  :)

I wonder why they didn't marry each other if their respective spouses had died and they were free.
Guess they enjoyed being blatant as you delicately put it!

Mind you it might not have been quite so obvious at the time, especially as they moved addresses as well between census! We have the benefit of hindsight and comparing the two returns! :-*
