1841 UK Census Occupation...what it says vs. what it is?
« on: Monday 09 February 15 12:11 GMT (UK) »
So, after the death of her husband, my fourth great grandmother is on the 1841 UK Census (in Pickering, North Riding Yorkshire) with the following occupation:

Now, honestly, I think it says "beer hoare"...am I wrong?

And next...what does that actually mean? barmaid? beer seller? pub owner? other?

For what it is worth, it says the location is "Spotted Cow" and it is on the north side of town (road from Pickering to Whitby, between WillowGate and Scalla-moor Farm).  A google search leads me to believe it might indeed be a pub.

Also, besides my gggg-gm, her daughter, her son, her father, and 1 ag labourer, no one else is listed in the "household".

Any input?

house! OK, I can see that now. The closure at the top of the u was so narrow I thought it was an a. Probably speaks to my own handwriting!

So what is the difference between a beer house and a pub? Same thing? Do we expect she "owned" it?

A beer house could only sell beer. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beerhouse_Act_1830 and http://www.midlandspubs.co.uk/glossary/beer-houses.htm
 and http://www.historyhouse.co.uk/articles/beerhouse.html

Whether she owned it or was a tenant will require some research!

Thank you @ShaunJ!

@catfordcrooner: Subsequently in 1851, Mary and her daughter are living in Scarborough. Mary has no listed occupation and Hannah is a dressmaker. (Hannah marries from Scarborough later in 1851.) In 1853 they immigrate to the US.  Hannah dies in 1855 and her brother Thomas raises her 2 children subsequently. Not sure when Mary died.

As for previous to 1841...I will be ordering FHL microfilm soon of either parish registers or bishops' transcripts of parish registers to see the occupation of her husband when the children were baptised. Her husband died in 1832 I think (best I can tell).
